OK using the XD Cam Transfer utility doesn't really copy the files, it re-wraps them creating Quicktime files to use in Final Cut. SMI file extensions are larger than 4 gigs and/or could be spanned over 2 cards.

You need an HD cpture card to monitor HDV. The cheapest way out is a Black Magic Intensity card together with an LCD using HDMI.
