Re: Christmas tree lights lighting up. by Kevin Camp on Nov 20, 2009 at 1:46:22 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum if you are color adjusting the tree photo to the point of black for everything except the lights, you may be able to use that layer with a blending mode of lighten, screen or add (probably screen or add) over...
Re: G5 memory for AE - Max it out? ECC vs non-ECC? by Kevin Camp on Oct 6, 2009 at 6:31:43 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum i don't think either of the 2.3ghz g5s were quad-core (two dual core cpus)... so if you only have 2 cores, the most ram ae will be able to use is just under 8gb with 'render multiple frames simultaneously' enabled...
Re: G5 memory for AE - Max it out? ECC vs non-ECC? by Kevin Camp on Oct 6, 2009 at 6:29:01 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum photoshop is a 32-bit application so it can only address 3gb of ram.
note there is a slight difference in the amount of ram that a 'foreground' process can use vs. a 'background' process. on osx a 32-bit foreground process...
Re: Why can't AE users just buy the FCP ProRes Codec?! by Kevin Camp on Sep 30, 2009 at 11:21:51 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum it really shouldn't be any trouble to choose a different codec when they export an mov from fcp... if they are already choosing export, they just need to choose the codec you ask them for. or they could provide...
Re: Hardware solutions - I'm clueless! by Kevin Camp on Sep 28, 2009 at 11:47:15 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum it would also help to know which version of ae you are using (as seen in the splash/about ae screen, like 8.0.2) and the versions of the third-party effects that are giving you trouble...
but for starters, quit ae, then hold...
Re: exported tagas, then re-imported, resolution quality???? by Kevin Camp on Sep 21, 2009 at 8:27:05 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum hi anita,
there's no compression in the targa format, so you won't see generational loss... but i believe targa is only 8bpc, so the 16-32bpc color data will converted to 8bpc.
while that's not the end of the world, if...
Re: AE rendering error (memory leak?) by Kevin Camp on Sep 13, 2009 at 12:48:32 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum hi bret,
it might be helpful to know which version of ae you are using, i haven't had too many memory leak type of issues with cs3 (8.0) and cs4 (9.0), but i'm sure there may still be some issues....
also, if...
Re: Align Paragraph Text to middle of box? by Kevin Camp on Aug 29, 2009 at 3:46:10 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum excellent methods pedro.
however, dean was looking for a way to vertically align the text completely hands free... they are using an automated script that is placing the text into the layer and rendering the comp without an operator -- i...
Re: confused... about ram use by Kevin Camp on Aug 26, 2009 at 12:16:45 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you don't necessarily need nucle pro... if you have after effects cs3, you can enable multiprocessing (preferences>multiprocessing, check the option for render multiple framed simultaneously). this will tell ae to launch a render engine for each available processor when...
Re: Mac Pro with GT 120 NVIDIA any problems CS3? by Kevin Camp on Aug 25, 2009 at 12:47:36 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum personally, for after effects work, i'd take the money that you'd spend upgrading the graphics card and spend that on more ram...
i don't know how much ram you are getting with your new macrpo, but with the new macpros...
Re: Position & function by Kevin Camp on Aug 21, 2009 at 4:21:21 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you can create circular rotation with an expression like this:
r = 100; // radius is pixels
p = 2; // period of rotation in seconds
x = Math.sin(2*Math.PI*time/p)*r;
y = Math.cos(2*Math.PI*time/p)*r;
value + [x,y]
set the radius and period values ass needed.
for spiral...
Re: incompatable compostion, open gl, final render by Kevin Camp on Aug 15, 2009 at 1:04:08 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum there are some effects that are not compatible with ae's multiprocessing, like cc widetime, cc time blend and i think even particle playground are a few. so that may be why mp is disabled and there may be some...
Re: Keylight 1.2... help! by Kevin Camp on Aug 11, 2009 at 5:29:34 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum [Frank Ruggiero] "If I remember correctly, dont you have to do a separate installation for keylight"
it used to be that way... in older versions of ae the third-party bundled effects (like keylight) were in an extras folder...
Re: render without solid, just transparent by Kevin Camp on Jul 20, 2009 at 6:23:46 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum sorry, the settings are actually in the output module settings, not the render settings... click the output module settings in the render queue, there you'll be able to set the render to rgba (as long as the codec you choose...

i think flip shoots in h.264. this codec (and others that use temporal compression, like hdv and mpeg-2) don't work very well in (search the forum for 'dave's stock answer #1' for...
Re: Alpha Problem with Lens Flare Effect when imported to Final Cut!! by Kevin Camp on Jun 18, 2009 at 2:45:32 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum hi jay,
by itself, lens flare doesn't create an alpha channel.... did you apply the lens flare to a black solid and then use the unmult effect to make the black transparent? if so, then it should key properly... if...
Re: AE rendering error (memory leak?) by Kevin Camp on Jun 16, 2009 at 2:45:12 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum [Bret Snyder] "Around 20 minutes in, I glanced back at the activity monitor and noticed a big increase of memory usage up to 2.84 gigs and sure enough, it crashed seconds later."

Re: 15 fps to 30 fps solutions? by Kevin Camp on May 21, 2009 at 9:21:06 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum interesting that it's a fractional difference, you'd think that 15fps to 30fps is just 2x the number of frames... or did you convert to 29.97fps?
if you converted to 29.97fps, then i'd try going to the even 30fps. if you...
Re: 15 fps to 30 fps solutions? by Kevin Camp on May 21, 2009 at 9:24:20 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum yep, you would have been better off going the other way around... but adjusting the frame rate up to 30fps seems like it should still workout.
since it sounds like the main problem is a frame skip from the end on...
Re: Problems with watertank effects and ink drops. by Kevin Camp on May 20, 2009 at 12:28:18 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum i'm not sure how you're set up, but i would shoot black ink on a white background, then generate a matte from that rather than 'key' the ink.
a big advantage of this is you can work with...
Re: How to create radial stripes in AE ? by Kevin Camp on May 18, 2009 at 11:57:33 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum the radio waves effect will create the radiating circles fairly easily. a few different layers with different rate of expansion and line thicknesses may get you close. it also looks like a distortion effect like bulge or spherize...

Re: hdv (mt2) faster then avi in After Effects by Kevin Camp on May 8, 2009 at 2:49:34 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum my initial suspicion would be that it is a data bottleneck at the drive or drive bus... if you have a bottleneck at the drive bus, then smaller, compressed files may work better than larger uncompressed files despite the...
Re: Swiss Transition by Kevin Camp on Apr 21, 2009 at 9:48:06 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you could probably get pretty close with by animating the positions of the 2 clips and throwing directional blur (or a blur that can be constrained to horizontal or vertical, like fast blur) on an adjustment layer over the clips...

Re: Problems with Canon XH-A1 Footage by Kevin Camp on Mar 20, 2009 at 3:02:42 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum aside from the problems of trying to key hdv, the footage looks interlaced...
looking at the edges of the head and arms of subject (which i assume are moving around) on the original image you can see interlacing. so the...
Re: re cs4 and 8 gb ram by Kevin Camp on Feb 20, 2009 at 9:36:01 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum i haven't read of any significant performance gains between cs3 and cs4... they are both 32-bit (on either mac or windows) and will only take advantage of more than 3gb of ram with the use of multiprocessing, or nucleo pro,...
Re: 23,976p rolling credits by Kevin Camp on Feb 16, 2009 at 11:49:20 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you asked for it....
there is one thing you need to do before pasting this expression in. add a check box expression control effect and name it " Field Friendly Movement ", the expression is looking for that control...
Re: 23,976p rolling credits by Kevin Camp on Feb 13, 2009 at 12:50:20 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum the main thing for creating a credit roll is to limit the vertical movement to whole pixels to avoid inconsistent aliasing of the text edges which can result in 'waviness' as the text scrolls up the screen.
if you have a...

Re: TROUBLES WITH WRITE ON by moldyboot on Jan 8, 2009 at 12:18:06 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum i think i would do the stroke approach on a separate layer and parent that lyaer to the map layer to maintain the scale and position relationship. if you wanted the line weight to scale with the map, you...
Re: speed up time, time lapse. by Kevin Camp on Dec 29, 2008 at 4:31:10 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum there are a couple of ways you could do this, but which way would be the best depends on exactly what you are looking to do.

Re: wiggler by Kevin Camp on Dec 16, 2008 at 11:19:02 pm in the Adobe After Effects Expressions Forum i'd probably try adding a slider control (effects>expression controls) and link that slider value to the second wiggle value (the amount) in your expression. the slider value can be key framed, so you can set the value to zero...

Re: High quality graphic looks bad in AE 6.5 by Kevin Camp on Nov 10, 2008 at 4:33:15 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum it looks like your logo was created using vector masks in photoshop... ae6.5 may be having issues with rasterizing the vector masks. try creating a copy of your psd and rasterize all the vector masks, then bring that copy...
Re: Still Getting Render Crashes >:( by Kevin Camp on Sep 17, 2008 at 8:03:41 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you can actually remove the entire folder that the preference file is kept in. it's in users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects, if you have cs3 the folder is called '8.0'.
additionally, you might try pulling out any quicktime components from library/quicktime and users/username/library/quicktime...
Re: Ideal video/audio format for work in AE? (using mencoder to convert from h.264/aac mp4) by Kevin Camp on Aug 17, 2008 at 4:53:57 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum as brendan mentioned, lossless animation or uncompressed avi would be best, to avoid further compression.
if you needed to conserve disk space quicktime's photojpeg is good quality codec with no temporal compression (which would be good for ae).
avid's dnxhd...
Re: AE RAM question by Kevin Camp on Aug 7, 2008 at 1:30:02 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum ae is only a 32-bit application so it can only address 3gb of ram. however, if you have a 64-bit os (osx, xp-64, vista-64) and multiple processors, then you can enable multiprocessing. this will launch a render engine...
Re: Expression(hold opacity connected to audio keyframes) by Kevin Camp on Jun 18, 2008 at 12:28:40 pm in the Adobe After Effects Expressions Forum something like this may work:
min = 0; //set minimum audio level
max = 15; //set maximum audio level
a = thisComp.layer("Audio Amplitude").effect("Both Channels")("Slider");
Math.round(linear(a,min,max,0,1)) * 100

Re: How can I create a round room? by Kevin Camp on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:21:16 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum the cc cylinder effect will 'wrap' a layer into a cylinder. the cylinder will react to a 3d camera, so you can place the camera in the middle of the cylinder. i believe dof would work with the...
Re: Are Realtime HD Previews Possible With An NVIDIA QuadroFX 5600? by Kevin Camp on Feb 27, 2008 at 12:31:24 pm in the Adobe After Effects Forum with mac (probably pc too) you can hand 2gb of ram to each core for rendering, if multiprocessing is enabled in ae (cs3). the way multiprocessing gets around the 32bit ram addressing is by running a separate render engine...

Re: Speed ramps&Slow downs w/ Pict sequences by Kevin Camp on Apr 24, 2008 at 9:58:58 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum interpolating pixels between frames to generate whole new frames isn't exactly the ideal way to work, and it rarely works well for graphics (video footage is a little more forgiving).

Re: constraining blending mode by Kevin Camp on Apr 24, 2008 at 9:59:06 am in the Adobe After Effects Forum you should be able to pre-comp the 3 layers, but then check the 't' box in the modes panel for the overlay layer (it's between the layer mode pulldown and the trakc matte pulldown).
that should matte the overlay layer to...
