I don't know the Canon, but I guess it have three RCA connexion A/V IN/OUT.
The yellow RCA should be the Video Composite. IN/OUT.
Plug it to any TV with Video IN.

Time for you to learn a bit of Color Correction.
Don't be afraid and drop the 3W Color Correction filter in your footage.
Play with the Middle and Highlights.
There are better options but you rather start by this one.

.mpg and .MP4 are not the favorite FC formats. There are few dirty workarounds but the best is that you use MPGStreamclip and convert them in QT movies with the same setting (Audio and Video) than your sequence.
