Thats fairly easy...first you can convert your text layer to 3D by going to the track motion window. Then at the top left, use the small window that marks top (z axis) to drag the text on and off...

To shorten or lengthen a transition, all you do is that when the two video clips are overlapped and you add a transition to that bit of overlapped area....then to shorten or lengthen you simply shorten or lengthen the overlapped bit....Hope that is clear...
