Bob Zelindual 23" Cinema monitors on AJA Kona system
by on Mar 20, 2003 at 2:52:50 am

I am so gunshy these days about alternate hardware configurations, even those that seem like the most obvious.
I am sure this will be ok, but I have a new client that wants to buy a new Kona system, and wants to put 2 23" Cinema displays on his system. Anyone see any potential problems with this?

Thanks -
Bob Zelin

Hi,

Wow, that's really serious, and I think it would be ok as long as the monitor card can handle it. Not sure about VRAM!

What a nice system that would be to use!

We are going to use the NVidia GEForce4 Ti Card in the MAC G4, and use a Gefen DVI-ADC converter ($149 US) to get the second Cinema display to work. This configuration was not our idea, and we will hear if we got it in the next couple of days.

I don't know if the config will work, or not. But a second 23" will be hard on the eyes. Type is small - especially for a bin monitor.

Bob we have configured systems using two Apple ADC Flat Panel displays. The parts you mention should work fine. You might want to suggest a 23 and 17 inch instead of two 23 inch.

I have the Ti cards as well. I have been thinking about drilling holes in the back end of the card to help air flow through it because it completely blocks the PCI card airflow in my D1.42 Toaster Oven.

why not start with Plan B?

Hi,

Yes, that's funny, and you do have to worry when the blank PCI shields you remove have holes in them for ventilation, and you know your replacing them with cards. It's enough to make you wonder what's going to happen.

I seem to recall reading somewhere about a limit to OSX desktop width. Don't remember exactly where, but it was in response to a question about a similar setup as your clients.

I assume he's also going to have an NTSC preview monitor, so we're looking at a 4560 pixel wide desktop (1920+1920+720). If 4500 pixels is the desktop limit (if I'm remembering correctly) then I would suggest a 23" and 20" Cinema setup. Actually, the 20" displays have the best pixel/price ratio. I've been thinking about getting a couple of those myself.....or holding off until the 30" is released :).

I don't know about the 23's but I built a system on a Quicksilver D1GB with dual 22's and it ran like a clock and was sensational to use. It was using a Matrox (why would you go there now?!) but I can't recall what sort of video card came with those G4s (6 months is such a long time!)

Anyway, judging by that I can't imagine a problem unless Quartz Extreme taxes the GFX card overly.

BTW, I sent the suite to the client (1000's of miles away) Called them a week later to see how it was going, they said they hadn't used it yet, they were just admiring the monitors!

It works! This is exactly the system setup I'm using. Being used to a Symphony, it works well to have all the bins on the second monitor leaving room for a long timelime on the first. The only difference is I'm using the Apple adaptor. Also thanks Apple for slashing the price of the displays 2 weeks after I'd bought two of them!!!

Only problem with 2x23" is physical desk space. It basically becomes too much physical space, so (in my opinion) you end up moving around too much to keep track of the entire desktop.

What works very well is 23"+17" or 2x20", simply because it's not physically as big... The 20" has a lot of screen estate as well. All the Apple LCDs have the same lower edge height, so even if you mix and match different sized monitors, it still looks great.

My setup is 22" +17" which is also totally lovely, but not as cool because the monitors are older. :)

Now, you might want to consider the Apple DVC-ADC converter, because it's a bit cheaper and a bit "prettier".

Seems like the problem of covering so much screen real estate (I'm guessing you're talking about with the mouse) would be a Wacom tablet. Since being on Discreet smoke for a couple of years I'd never go back to a mouse. The tablet provides an absolute reference to all corners of the screen and is easily configurable to a two monitor setup.

I'd agree if my interface was as "fixed" as that of the Discreet or Quantel systems (meaning the interface is really kind of optimized for a tablet, on Quantel by the gestures and on Discreet because the buttons and even number input boxes are drag-sensitive and stay put in their ). On these systems, having a tablet is really essential.

Or if you are drawing, paintbox-style with PhotoShop, I also prefer it.

However, for Final Cut Pro... I really don't like using a tablet. It feels quite wrong.

Also, there are no tablets that are the same aspect ratio as the widescreen format, and certainly not when you have two widescreen monitors side by side. :)
