Saw a post about this deck w/ several people praising it. We are ordering one later this week. One question, does the SDI have embedded audio or do you have to use the XLR to an analog BOB?

Sachmo,

The J3 comes with two seperate options. If you order the SDI board, then the SDI output does have embedded audio. Also, there are analog XLR audio outputs and composite video for monitoring.

This is a great deck to use as a feeder deck.

Was hoping it would. Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear so many good comments about this deck. It's cheap for DBeta but it's still a lot of money for us to spend. Makes it easier when you know people are using it in the real world and having success with it.

[sachmo] "It's cheap for DBeta but it's still a lot of money for us to spend."

I echo your comments! I bought this deck about 4 months ago because I have one client that always shoots DBeta. The deck has been a super aquisition and I've noticed that even BetaSP looks better coming down SDI than Component.

One thing that I really love with the CineWave is that we can capture video via SDI and audio via XLR if you want to. On one shoot the audio was really really low on the field tapes so I ran the audio through the Mackie board to raise it on the way it. Worked like a charm. You should really like this deck.

It takes a few tries to get used to how tight the tapes are though. Seems almost like they shouldn't fit.

There is no recorder version of this machine. I could have sworn I saw one when I was first investigating this machine 6 months ago for around 35k, but never saw it again.

I paid either 11,500 or 11,800 through b&h photo. prior to purchasing this deck I was pricing out a used dbeta player only for 11k, so this is a great deal. awesome machine that has been in almost daily use now for 2 months.

Sony has now come out with an "HD" version of this deck for around $22 or $25k. It plays back various formats of HD.

The point of this deck is to have a cheap player-only. It has a lot of technology from the recorders left out.

Walter,

I also thinking about getting the new Sony JH3 deck. The diffeence between that one, whick comes out in a few months, and the one that is out now, is that the JH3 will handle 24p footage. It's a few thousand more, but it reads it all in Sony HD formats.

Very cool info Justin! I didn't know another deck was already on the way. I'm thinking probably third or fourth quarter aquisition so that will probably be out just in time!

From what I understand, it won't do the new HDCAM SR format though, wich is what Sony will be pushing in the future for HD production.

Always interesting, never easy...
