It seems my new 1.25Ghz MDD with firewire 800 has the date bug. This computer runs 10.2.3 (build 6H58) and doesn't boot to OS 9 or even the previous build of OS X (build 6G30). Does anyone else out there have one of these new Macs, and are you seeing this same problem ?

Bart

P.S. For those who don't know about it the "date bug" resets your date/time to December 1969 every time you shut down the computer.

Bart, I have set my date and time and the computer seems ok.. As long as I don't reboot or turn off the Mac, What is the down side to this date bug?? Are you noticing it affecting other programs?

Will it corrupt files if the Mac is rebooted? Will it corrupt files If the Mac is rebooted and you reset time and date?

My Medea RTRX gets funky if I even think about shutting down the Mac.. So It stays on all the time.. Kinda makes you wonder wether this date bug and the apple scsi problems are related..

I quess I am interested in finding out what the 'downside' is to staying with 10.2.4 ...

I really don't think you could repeat the 10.2.4 date bug under 10.2.3. What you are describing must be another problem (could still be OS related but different). When you restart your system make sure the clock is allright before you save any files or install software. You certainly don't want a bunch of files with 1969 as the creation date.

[Johan Edstrom] "I really don't think you could repeat the 10.2.4 date bug under 10.2.3."

Apparently the problem in 10.2.4 that causes the date bug is also present in 10.2.3 build 6H58. Check your Apple System Profiler. If you're running 10.2.3 on a system other than the just released FW 800 model I'd be willing to wager you're running build 6G30 (which doesn't have the bug). My problem is these new systems won't run on 6G30 so I really don't have many options at this point.

Bart

P.S. Johan, you're a bad influence. Now you've got me wearing MY "ultranerd" T-shirt !! :)

Well I am running the 6G30 on my machines (iBook, iMac, older G4's) so that explains it. (Putting on the nerd jump suit).

Nate,

I'm confident that as long as you keep your date and time set correctly you should be okay (for the time being).

That's not to say this date bug isn't causing other problems. Apparently it messes with the Power Management Unit (PMU) in the systems it affects. For example your PRAM battery which usually lasts three to five years could be completely drained (and useless) in a matter of hours.

There have been reports from PowerBook owners of battery drain increasing exponentially to the point of being unable to run the computer for more than a few minutes on a full battery charge. Other users have reported PowerBook batteries actually being trashed - to the point they needed to be replaced after the owners reverted back to 10.2.3.

There have also been random reports of Energy Saver settings suddenly disappearing for no reason. This could dramatically affect the performance of an NLE if not detected and corrected. If you continue running 10.2.4 keep an eye out for these manifestations. Or do like I did, and take an afternoon to revert you're system back to 10.2.3 (build 6G30).

Bart

P.S. Read all the gory details at MacFixit.com.
