Ok...now that we have our Christmas present delivered, for those who are making the switch, please let us know what kind of issues you bump into...OSX itself, installation...etc so that the rest who are going to make the move but a little uncertain will benefit from your experience.

I will be testing it out this week and will report anything I can find but I'm not an editing facility so can't really report anything in details. I will get some of my customers who are ready to switch to help out with the reports.

Thanks...have fun and all the best ! Here we go !

[ Chrispy ] Ok...now that we have our Christmas present delivered, for those who are making the switch, please let us know what kind of issues you bump into...OSX itself, installation...etc so that the rest who are going to make the move but a little uncertain will benefit from your experience.

Haven't really sat down with this yet, but I did throw together a setup yesterday, and this is what came up:
  • There is an issue with mirroring out to After Effects -- when trying a RAM preview, the video flickers to green all the time. This is even when taking into account that the reccomended setting is "Either RAM preview or Window Updates, but not both." This happens intermittently, and not every time.
  • Am having some issues with scrubbing in FCP -- nothing happens until I actually press play on a clip. Scrubbing works fine if I turn off the External Video display or choose "None" as my External Video target. If I add some render-effects on there, I need to turn back on External Video to be able to see these, and switch it off again when I have rendered the effects. I have no idea what causes this.
  • Scrubbing through files is much much smoother than before.
  • Working from IDE disks is fine for simple playback. Playback from a FireWire disk works as well. Have not tried editing from an IDE-raid yet.
  • Direct playback of CineWave files from the QuickTime player is no longer possible. Why is this?
  • Poor performance from Medea drives compared to on OS 9. Reverse playback just locks it up completely, by the look of things.
  • Still not possible to choose SMPTE bars out as default output, nor a still image. I know this is silly, but it would have been nice.
  • CineWave not available as secondary/terciary Mac desktop
  • No inverse telecine on capture, so we can not capture directly to 23.976 frames per second. You still need a program like Cinema Tools in order to do this.
  • The audio inputs/outputs are available to Mac OS X audio programs, which is very nice, complete with selectable SDI groups, etc.
  • Good readme-file that covers a lot of common issues
  • FCP has simply vanished on a couple of occasions before and immediately after capture. Just vanished, no "FCP has unexpectedly quit."
  • Some weird issue capturing via the Pro Digital BOB with sound when no sound is really present on the input. FCP complains that it can not capture audio but still goes out, cues tape and captures, leaving no file to be found anywhere.

Just my initial reactions, on a Dual 1000 QuickSilver that's served me so well for so long. I haven't tried in another system yet, in case these issues are limited to this machine.

Can't believe I'm sitting here doing this testing on Christmas Eve, and not even feeling guilty about it.

Thanks, guys. :P

You're right, of course.

For me, who grew up where Christmas usually meant the first snow of winter, dressing up in heavy coats, running around outside throwing snowballs and all that, it's really hard to get in the spirit when a t-shirt is more than warm enough because it's some 20 degrees C outside. There's just something missing...

Also, it's still just 11 in the morning! Let the boy have some fun before dinner and presents and all that other good stuff. This is kind of like sitting down and watching the cartoons all morning.

It's so hard to accept the fact that I'm an adult now.

[Rune Hansen] "It's so hard to accept the fact that I'm an adult now."

These are the exact words I mumble as I get out of bed every day of my life.

With me, that's mostly "!@#$%^& why do I have to get up! I don't want to get up! Can I stay just another five minutes? Yeah, I can stay for another five minutes. Just five minutes..."

*snore*
