I shot some footage for 1.85 but the widescreen plug-in for FCP takes forever to render. Can anyone think of some way either RT or faster then my option to get letterbox?

Much appreciated

If the original footage is anamorphic, then cropping will chop off part of the usable picture. Use the aspect ratio slider under Motion->Distort in the Viewer. The proper setting for 1.85 is -33.33. Real time, too.

The only video card that does RT Matte Genretaion is the Aurora Igniter RT Card. There are two option for you if you are using cinewave, they also vary in price.

Option 1:

If the utmost in quality is the issue and you are uisng SDI I/O there is the EVERTZ Standard Defintion Rectilue Generator. This will make mattes, safe area markers, crosshairs, etc. all user definable. It runs about $ 4500 and is SDI I/O. It is a professional piece of broadcast equipment and you can check it out ar http://www.evertz.com. the model number is 9590.

Option 2:

If you are just making preview copies and want to kill keycode and timecode or just have a clean matte, there is the Horita MG-50. This will generate mattes, all user defined also. It's I/O is only Composite Anaolg BNC. It runs for $ 289. Check them out at http://www.hortia.com

Either one of these units would be placed between the ouput of the cinewave and your deck.

Hope this helps

I am specifically looking for a software based RT solution. I have regular (non-anamorphic) footage that was framed for 1.85. I just want a RT way to put the black matte over the footage and the ability to adjust its orientation behind the matte.

I have cinewave RT

thanks a lot

What about going inot photoshop and making a black solid bg. in the alpha channel make a 1.85 matte. Import that into FCP and edit it on a second vidoe track over your footage. RT should be able to handle compositing 2 static graphic layers w/ alphas. I'll try this tomorrow when I get on the system I'm working on. Try it out and I'll let you know if it works good for me otherwise.

Eric is right...use Photoshop to create a 1.85 matte and Cinewave will be able to play that back in RT on a 2nd track.

Or you could nest your entire sequence and use the cropping (top/bottom) to create the 1.85 "matte" since it is non-anamorphic but not sure if it will still be in RT.

Will try and let you know.

This Photoshop black borders idea is one I've used in the past with regular 4:3 footage that the client wanted to letterbox. Since Still graphics with Alpha are RT, this should work fine. Especially if you this in conjuction with the Cropping suggestion from Bill Davis above.
