I have an Igniter Card with Component i/o (Compression 1.5:1) on a dual 533 G4 running on OS9.2
Can I use the same card on a G5 running OSX Panther?

It sounds by the age of your system that you purchsed your Igniter several years ago. It's most likely the older 5 volt card. You would need to upgrade your card to the newer 3.3 volt card for it to work in a G5. This is fairly expensive upgrade. In most situations it's cheaper to just purchase one of the newer Pipe cards or Pipe Studio. Aurora give a trade in discount. Remember, the Igniter card was designed back in the old Blue and White G3 days. Most of us have gotten four to five years of use out of this card.

If you need to do 24fps film editing, the Igniter is still the only card that does true 24fps capture and playback. I'm keeping my Igniter around for that very reason. I've got two more 35mm features that I'll be editing in which case I'll need my Igniter. All my other work is done with the Pipe Pro.

Have the old component card and have upgraded to a G5 as well. In bringing over a ton of projects onto the G5 in FCP 4.5, I have a lot of timelines set for the Aurora codec which I now can't run because I don't have a card. What should I switch the codec to for best quality? thanks all.

Gee Robert,

I guess you could transcode it all to DVC pro 50. How do you plan on capturing any new media?

thanks for the reply David.

For the moment, I'm simply going in from DV until I figure my next move i/o wise. What I'm curious about is the best codec to transcode too, mostly for the moment to output as a QT for DVD burning. You think DVCPro 50 is the choice here?

If you need to go to DVD then just go striaght from the Aurora codec.

Problem is, FCP wants to change the codec to Motion JPEG A. Let me elaborate: if I do know work and open up a timeline that was done w/an Aurora codec, I'm fine. But as soon as I want to do some work on it, FCP throws me a dialog box that the codec has to be changed.

When I convert an Aurora timeline to DV or DVCpro50, I get a weird rippling of the image that is most evident when there is motion. There also seems to be a whitish haze, most noticeable on the blacks. I'm really stuck here, and am already going to miss a deadline. Sent a message to Aurora, but haven't heard back yet.

I had that problem when I upgraded to Final Cut Pro HD. In order to open up projects in Final Cut Pro 4 I had to uninstall HD or I would get the same dialogue box about changing codecs. Hope this helps
