 | G5 fiber channel & XRaid
by Mark James on Nov 14, 2003 at 2:03:43 pm |
I have
G5 dual 2Ghtz
XRaid - set to Raid 30
FCP 4.0.2
Fibre channel Card
Igniter Studio
All latest drivers
QT6.4
OSX 10.2.8
Having lots of problems with playback of RT effects, stuttering and dropped frames.(Normal low data rate compressed plays back ok, but a bit erratic, particularly with RT effects. I've also had audio distortion mentioned in earlier posting.) Also, I cannot playback high data rate video. I tried the Aurora Uncompressed Xtreeme (around 28mbs) and it just won't play. (Unbelievable considering the suposed performance of the hardware!) Aurora say that Xraid and the fiber channel are unsupported by them at the moment and that this is the cause of the problems. I've also heard that lots of people are having probs with raid systems on G5. Does any one know anything about this? I would be grateful if any one has a similar set up, to know if they have managed to get it to work sucessfully, or if they are having same problems. Has anyone got any sugestions as to whether the raid settings make any difference and what would be the best setting? (Mine is set at Raid 30 which was recommeded to me) Also wondering, should I hold out and wait for software updates, or change my raid system? (which I don't really want to do) Any help gratefully received.
Mark

Can you give some specifics about the XRaid configuration. It's been reported on several other forums that a 4 drive XRaid doesn't give good speed results. Also, what RAM configuration did you get on the XRaid. Did you max it out at 512. Most of the success stories I've read about the XRaid are from people who purchased the fully maxed out system.

Whatever the config used for the xserve RAID, it will not work with IgniterRT Cards, they seem to be incompatible when used together. Playback causes a lot of problems. Tried with both xserve 7 and 14 drives, throuput is not an issue, sounds like more a conflict between Aurora card, and fiber channel card. That's bad, because the xserve RAID works fine with other major cards from AJA and Blackmagic.

Yes, this seems to be the case. Although I've also heard this is a specific problem with G5 as the fibre channel does work with Igniter and G4. (But this may just be hearsay) Aurora have told me that they have just recieved an XRaid and are currently testing it. So hopefully there may be a sollution soon. I have six 180 Gig drives in my array set to Raid 30. This gives me about 650Gigs of usable space. I've got maximum ram cache set to the drives. I also have the larger 512(?)Mb ram on the controller cache. I would have thought this should easilly sustain the 28mbs sec or so needed for realtime.
Unfortunately you can't change raid settings without loosing material so I can't try other options at the moment. Has anyone any experience of other settings? Raid 5 or 50?
I'll wait a bit longer to see what happens but I may have to change something. The drive or Igniter? That is the question. But in the middle of big project that I'm currently offlining. (Just about working but with problems on any realtime effects) I did want to online the project though, so all options are tricky at the moment.
Any answers gratefully received.
