Tony!Some Optimistic Rumors...
by on Jun 13, 2003 at 7:21:37 pm

I copied the following from a Mac rumor site that has been pretty reliable it the past. I hope he is right!

Warning: The following is *not* based on solid industry tips, and is *not* offered as a fact-based set of predictions. This is just one lone MacWhispers guy taking a shot at looking ahead at what might be in store from the Apple pipeline over the coming year. And, from what we see here at MacWhispers Central, this is going to be one incredibly entertaining year.

There are more parallel major development programs underway at Apple today than at any time in the company's history: new chips, new motherboards, new enclosures, new operating systems, new application software, new lifestyle devices, new accessories, new services... the major word in the Cupertino vocabulary these days is "New."

The headlines right now are all spinning around the migration to IBM's PowerPC 970 processor, and around just what specific timetable will be unrolling all the wonderful new products built around this new chip. But, there's a lot more happening behind the scenes than the PowerPC 970.

What we see coming is a near simultaneous release of a single processor PowerPC 970 based Power Mac and a PPC 970 based mid-size Powerbook around the time of WWDC; it's certain these will be announced at the keynote, but we can't nail down actual shipping release times any closer than to say we expect them to ship within no more than 30-days of the keynote. We then see two dual processor PPC 970 Power Macs coming within 60 to 90 days following WWDC, and a speed bump Powerbook model prior to Christmas.

We do not see the 12 and 17-inch Powerbooks, the iMac, or the Xserve shipping with PPC 970 processors before Christmas this year, but do see these platforms moving to the new architecture during (calendar) Q1 2004. Everything we have heard presently points toward the eMac remaining G4-based for the foreseeable future, and to the iBook moving to the Gobi IBM G3 platform around year's end.

Did we say "Christmas?"... While we have not nailed down what it does, we have verified that a small Apple handheld device is entering the production process, with volume availability well before Christmas. White plastic, about 5 by 7 by 1-inch in size, this is the "enclosure" we have been reporting on for the past several weeks. We will be as curious as anyone to see what the thing actually does, but it is certain to make one terrific gift!

Christmas will also see what we visualize as a "home A/V system companion," and what we've previously referred to as the iPod Super Dock. Adding network connectivity, multiple types of audio I/O's, remote control, and possibly even wireless connectivity to the humble iPod, this is also to be one hot Christmas 2003 gift item.

We haven't nailed this one down firmly enough to make a standalone front page news item out of it, but we are now convinced that Apple is moving to production with its own digital camera design, and will have it to market prior to Christmas 2003. Integrated tightly with a new, enhanced version of iPhoto, this is the product that Apple will use to turn the market's attention back to photography... after most of the year seeing us all distracted by Apple's music offerings. Again: This prediction is based on OEM supplier reports, and is one we believe to be real.

We also have a lone report here from a new OEM source saying that Apple is *not* planning a special DJ edition iPod, as was recently reported in several mainstream press outlets. Instead, according to this source, Apple is developing a special docking stand and software package designed to mount two iPods and an iBook/Powerbook, and to enable what will certainly be "the most amazing DJ system ever created." We will make a point to continue digging on this report, and will report any new info we find. But, frankly, this sounds like a much more Apple-like way to address the DJ market than re-engineering the iPod.

Finally, we have a steady flow of reports coming in of a whole gamut of new Apple branded accessories: headphones, speakers, cables and connectivity gadgets, at least two new mouse and keyboard designs... and, if these whispers are true, some sort of USB-based control surface device.

All in all, we believe the next year will be the most exciting time in a long time to be an Apple fan, as the stream of interesting and exciting products rolling our way is going to be pretty amazing.

It all starts at WWDC, and just keeps rolling forward from there.

Hi
A USB Control Surface! I hope not just a USB one, but a proper FireWire one for Logic/FCP. By all means a USB iTwiddle for the iMac brigade, but an equivalent to the Digi002+MOTU828ii with control+audio/midi I/O is whats needed surely...
Keep up the rumours please!

Hey Paul,

that sounds like some interesting ideas.

Here's a slightly earlier, and probably true rumor from the same source as above. It sounds like Apple maybe on the right track.

With the entire Mac world abuzz with (often conflicting) reports of the Apple transition to the IBM PowerPC 970 processor family, we have decided to report a summary of all that we know at this time... not from regurgitated rumors obtained from other web sites, but from our own OEM contacts in the Apple supply pipeline.

We have no software information sources; all information we receive comes from people working in various positions in and around plants in Taiwan that actually supply parts or perform hardware assembly operations on Apple products. So, we have to leave the software speculation to sites such as Think Secret and, it now seems, eWeek.

What we know at this point is as follows:

- The IBM PPC 970 chips are now actually in volume production for only two specific end uses: IBM's own servers, and for Apple Computer.

- The plant contracted for assembly of the new Power Mac is now actually manufacturing production Power Macs with single PPC 970 processors.

- The plant contracted for assembly of the new 15.4-inch Powerbook has just now begun manufacturing production Powerbooks with the PPC 970 processor.

- The new Power Mac has a sister model with a 2-processor motherboard that is not yet in actual production, but that could be put into production at any time.

- The new Power Mac has a new case design with "metallic look plastics," and a front panel "mostly made with the same anodized aluminum surface" as the newest Powerbooks.

- The new Power Mac retains "handles," though not in the same form as the current design.

We have no sources or contacts within Apple Computer, so we cannot state that company's actual release plans for these products. However, we can say that both the new PPC 970 Power Mac and Powerbook will have substantial inventory already produced by the time of the upcoming WWDC keynote.

In closing, we want to address the performance of the new PPC 970 machines, as we do have direct information on this topic, and we consider that information to be highly reliable. Despite the recent flurry of confusing claims published by eWeek and others, we stand by our report that the new Power Mac and Powerbook have overall performance approximately 1.25 to 1.5 times that of a similarly clocked G4 on non-Altivec optimized applications. On Altivec optimized tasks, these machines have as much as 2 to 2.5 times the through performance as a similarly clocked G4. Our understanding is that this performance is occurring using bone-stock OS X 10.2.6 on pre-production single processor PPC 970 machines... an OS with none of the optimization now being rumored as being needed for supporting the PPC 970's performance potential.

Sounds like we're going to be upgrading in the near future,

Tony!

One thing I'd like to hear coming down the pipelines is that apple is addressing the high end open GL card market. I'd really like to see apple OS take advantage of the power these cards offer. Dual planes and all that would be awesome on the Mac, especially when combined with some powerfull chips to render with.

WWDC is the World Wide Developers Conference, a five day conference with Apple's best engineers and technical people. This is the big event each year for anyone developing products Apple Machines. Apple often makes some big announcements, especially this year since they won't be attending MacWorld (summer MacWorld only).

Apple will be announcing Jaguar, the next version of OS X. It is strongly rumored by most of the rumor sites that Apple will also announce the new IBM powered machines. If so, they should be a huge step forward in the Apple's effort to catch up (and maybe pass) PC's in speed and power.

I agree with you, it would be nice to see some of the very high-end OpenGL cards on the Mac.

Wow, I think I'm getting old or something. Of course, your right it's Panther they are introducing.

actually, apple changed their minds about a month or so ago and will be delivering the keynote at macworld. however, it will be the hardware VP, Greg Joswiak, not steve jobs giving the keynote.

Yes, but what I meant is that they won't have a booth. I doubt they would announce new machines at MWNY without being on the show floor to let everyone see them. I could be wrong.

Well it all sounds promising, but given the past letdowns, I think I'll wait till it's actually here before I let my hopes get to high. Only then will I jump up and down and around about it.
