I am posting this to the RAID forum also, but I'm not sure where the problem is, so I'm asking here also.
We have a Media Raid 100GB drive that we use for video media storage with our MAC G4 500. We have had no problems with it in the past, and have successfully upgraded to OSX with no issues. Then just this week, when we boot up in OSX, it says that we have a unreadable disk insterted, and asks whether or not we want to initialize the disk to use it. We have also tried to boot up in 9.2, and it doesn't recognize the RAID at all.
Is there any way that we can get the information off the the RAID before we initialize it? We have one large project on the RAID that I would hate to lose.

I appreciate any help,

Dan

Try running Disk Warrior on it first. Even if your drive isn't showing up, it may work. Else, look below.

Try shutting the RAID off, disconnect the cables, re-connect and switch it back on. That sometimes works for us. When all else fails, we do a hot plug with the drive. We'll boot the system up with the drive not plugged into the system and connect it hot. That's only done as a completely last resort.

Then we use DiskWarrior to resurrect the drive. If you don't have it, get it. Once your project is done and vital data backed up, be sure to re-initialize your RAID completely. HTH

Well, now we have a different problem. We finally were able to get the computer to see the RAID, and get our information off of it. However, when we initialized it, it only read it as a 50GB RAID rather than the 100GB that it is. It is not partitioned in any way, and has never been. But OS X, Disk Warrior, and Nortons all only see 48.6 GB of space. Also on the box itself, only the top two lights are flashing.

Hope you can help,
Dan

hello...

well - if you only have two lights and you can only see half the raid, i'd think that perhaps two of the drives might have died?

not a pleasant thought, but it's what first hit me when you described this... :-(

What is the proper burial for a RAID drive?
Set in on fire atop a mound of old keyboards?
Or some sort or burial at sea?

Thanks anyway for the suggestions.

Could be a bad or disconnected cable inside the unit, though I wouldn't recommend opening it up unless Tech Support has you do that. Call Medea and they will likely just send a replacement and have you ship back the old one. HTH

Just curious... how is it that you were able to get your info off the raid if you lost any of the drives? Is it possible that when you restriped it that you did it in raid 1 instead of 0? As a redundant (mirroring) raid... your drives will show only half the total space. Just a thought.
