I haven't heard anything about Sony Xpri in awhile and I am wondering if the product was cut during recent layoffs at Sony. Are we to expect any new road shows for Xpri?

Dear Mr. Grilliman.
Nope. The XPRI hasn't died, neither have Sony - I haven't heard about any layoffs within Sony for the last 2 years...
If you're in the neighbourhood Sony will be showing a XPRI SD and a XPRI HD at the Video Forum in Wembley, London, UK in beginning of Feb. After that, they (Sony UK) will be travelling the length of UK preaching the XPRI.
Also, further down the posting list, you will notice that a review of version 3 is shortly due.

Video Forum
Wembley, London, Hall 1 Stand Number: 312 Tuesday 5th February to Thursday 7th February 9.30 am - 5.00 pm (4.00pm Thursday)
At this years Video Forum Sony will be exhibiting an extensive range of products; From professional camcorders, VTRs and non-linear-editors right through to their latest advances in LCD technology and audio equipment - you’ll be sure to find the perfect kit for your production.
In the digitally based broadcast industry of today and tomorrow, only the fittest enterprises will grow and prosper. In short, those who deliver the quality, flexibility, choice and value – that an ever more demanding audience requires.
Productions today are faced with new challenges, not only is there demand for higher quality at lower costs, but there is a greater emphasis on creating productions for a variety of distribution platforms.
This is an AnycastWorld: any media, any time, anywhere.
Whether you are creating for television, DVD or the web, Sony has the latest and most advanced digital equipment to allow you to get the most from your production.
To meet the challenge of producing programmes in today’s increasingly competitive marketplace, broadcasters are looking for every opportunity to improve the efficiency of their operation, whilst maintaining the quality of output for which they are renowned. Also, the rapid increase in the channels now on-air has provided new possibilities to generate significant revenue from existing archived material. Many users are now studying how to adapt their current installations to take advantage of these new areas.
Growing and developing from the continuous success of DVCAM, Betacam SX and Digital Betacam, Sony will also be showing their new range of MPEG IMX products including the multi-format VTRs.
Developed from Sony’s unique experience of, and world-renowned reputation for, 1/2” recorders: Betacam, Betacam SP, Betacam SX and Digital Betacam, the MSW-2000P Series ensures compatibility with all Betacam-based tape libraries and facilities.
Not only is this exciting new range the ideal tool for migrating to an open MPEG-2 environment – quickly, simply and cost effectively; it is perfect for protecting your investment in current 1/2” resources.
In addition to the MSW VTR range Sony has introduced the new J-Series compact players. These low cost players are available in either analogue or SDI and are the perfect solution for a simple desktop viewer or non-linear-feeder. (The J-3 compact player having already reached over 100 units supplied in the UK.) This provides the ideal foundation for anyone involved with ½” tapes or the introduction of material that has been acquired on MPEG IMX.
Introducing the new MPEG IMX camcorder, the MSW-900P.
The MSW-900P Camcorder is the latest addition to the Sony MPEG IMX family, widescreen switchable, it features the latest developments in CCD and LSI technologies. The camcorder offers high picture quality approaching that of Digital Betacam and functionality suitable for a wide range of applications such as TV drama, sports, general TV production, animation and news.
Moving on from MPEG IMX, Sony will also be offering the opportunity to see the superior digital quality of its High Definition products both on the stand and in a dedicated HD pavilion.
This will include the all new multi-format High Definition VTR and the HDW-F900 camcorder offering a digital alternative to 35mm film. Giving you a true Sony high definition experience at Video Forum.
Further, Sony will be presenting demonstrations of their state-of-the-art non-liner editor, XPRI. This new NLE capable of native high definition and MPEG IMX editing will be accompanied by an experienced operator who can show its true capabilities to create and edit video productions.
I have just spent 3 days on the XPRI editing a HD shortfilm at the Videoforum-2002. And it is rocking.
However, at NAB-2002 we should see the arrival of the "King Cobra" board. Realtime grading and 3-D effects in HD. + acouple of other interesting news - so yes, Sony should be making this year an HD-Cam and XPRI year.
