Software Conflicts
by Jim Nazer on Jan 8, 2002 at 6:03:20 pm

Are there any concerns with adding 3rd party software such as Adobe Photoshop or AfterEffects within the Xpri box? How about network cards? We want to link to our LAN, any concerns or recommendations? We have 3 Xpri SD NEL's that are prone to freezing and don't want to add anything that might compromise their stability.

Thanks

Jim Nazer

Hey Jim.

Your Xpri comes installed with Commotion. And running on Windows 2000, I can't see any problems with installing Adobe software. However, I would be careful not to allow After-effects to take "priority" on the videocard.

We have just yesterday hooked the XPRI up to a T-Base 100 Hub, sharing with 2 other suites and a Boris/combustion/3D-Max workstation (All NT4 and Windows-2000). Had a editor working all day with no problems. - and there should be network card in the XPRI as standard.
I did find a couple of months ago, when doing the same to a Windows-98 computer, that this was slowing it down...

What version of the XPRI are you running? And have you had a demo of version 3 - Very Nice! Scheduled for release end of Jan.

Keep calling

Hey Mads,

We are running v2.02. Haven't seen v3 yet, what improvements can we expect? Commotion is great, but need more tools such as AE and Photoshop to really start having fun! When you say don't let them take 'priority' of the video card what do you mean? I've noticed when using Commotion I have errors related to the AV I/O card, is this common?

Will keep calling,

Jim

Hey Jim.

I am in the middle of writing a review of version 3...
Without saying too much ;-) you'll get Audio jog in timeline that matches the DNE-2000. Audio slomo. The export and import of files is getting really nice + major improvements to the general handling of the XPRI.

If after-effects is asking you whether you want to use the video-card for displaying to the video monitor, then be careful that the XPRI and AE software does not end up fighting for resources. - then again, I have never tried to install AE, so I am not the best one to advice on this.

We haven't used commotion, yet - Boris RED and combustion is our most used pkg's for that kind of effects.

All the Best
Mads
