Illustrator-Release to layers
by Al Balderas on Oct 3, 2002 at 10:18:21 pm

Hi,

I have some text on a layer and would like to have the individual letters on their own layers. I read the manual about Release To Layers and that's exactly what I'm trying to do.

I created Outlines from my text. If I don't have to, please let me know what to do, that would be great. I then select the resulting outlines and choose the Release To Layers command and it creates layers, but it creates a sub-layer and then a group underneath that sub-layer. I try to bring that into After Effects as a Composition and it only brings in the one layer.

Any help is appreciated.
Gracias,

Al

Select all your sub-layers and drag them above the top layer and release. Now delete the empty layer. EZ as pie.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for the info. I had some trouble at first when I tried your suggestion.

I was creating outlines out of my text and then I was selecting the Layer 1 circle to select all the artwork and releasing to layers and it just made another layer with a “group” layer and all the artwork below it. I finally realized I needed to select the "group" layer circle below layer 1 and then do a release to layers. That's when I got it to work and then selected all the layers and dragged them above the top layer.

I still have a hard time with how Illustrator 10 uses the layers and as soon as you put something on it there's a “sub-layer” and then maybe a “group” layer and then “compound path” layer.

Gracias,
Al
