Brochures?

I have just bought Photoshop and Illustrator, and now I want to create a brochure for our company. I'm told I need something like Adobe Pagemaker, but do I really "need" this?
Can't I just create my text, images and so on, as layers in Illustrator and/or Photoshop, save in PDF (or other?) format, then give this to my local printing firm to print some brochures for us? Is there perhaps some problem with printing right up to the edge of the page by doing it this way?
I haven't tried it yet but I don't want to waste my time if it can't be done. At the same time I don't want to waste my money buying, and my time learning, yet another application if I don't really need it.

In there yes... you can use Illustrator or photoshop to layout a brochure.... the big problem is that a program like Pagemaker is designed to do page layout, it has much better features for text handling such as spell check, columns, automatic page numbering, master pages, text styles, greater control of leading, kerning and other text controls.
I kind of compare it to this... You can layout business cards in Microsoft word, but it's not the easist program to do it in, and it doesn't give you all the features a graphic designer would want/need.
