by jeremy on Oct 2, 2002 at 2:20:13 pm

IS THERE ANY WAY TO SCAN IN AN IMAGE OF A LOGO AND HAVE IT CONVERTED TO AN OUTLINE. I NEED LOGO CONVERTED SO AS TO PLOT THEM ON A VINYL CUTTER.

you can use the magic wand tool to make the logo a selection (hopefully it's all one color?) then in the paths palette choose "make work paths from selection". I have never had very good luck with this though, because it doesn't give you clean lines, and either gives you way too many points in your paths, or rounds all the paths off.
In my experience, if you can't get a vector format of the logo, your best bet is to manually trace the logo with the pen tool.

ps--why are you shouting?

TOO LAZY TO HIT THE CAPS LOCK BUTTON...there your go.
Thanks for the help. Hate to sound stupid, but how would I go about getting a vector format of the logo.
Thanks again.

sorry to be unclear--I just meant that whoever originally created the logo very likely has it in a vector format--however, sometimes it's hard to track down. I don't know if your logo has come from a client, but if so, they surely either have a vector format version, or their printer does. But I've also worked with clients that swear up and down they don't have one, even though they have huge signs and posters with the logo on it.
after awhile, you just say "whatever", trace it, and bill them for it.

oh, and by "vector format", i'm talking about an Illustrator file, an EPS file, etc.

Your info is helpful. I am using Ill. Ver 7 and so there are a lot of drawbacks (i.e. no wand). I can use the autotrace, but I was thinking there would be an easier way with 10 or higher. I know in Photoshop I can use a MWand there and create work paths there. When I drag and drop I get the whole canvas. Is there a way to get just the paths over.

hi jeremy,
yes, in Photoshop after you create work paths, you can go to File>Export>Paths to Illustrator--this only exports the paths without the rest of the canvas--oh, and i apologize again--i just assumed you were doing all this in Photoshop--i forget that this is in Illustrator forum, also.
good luck

A million and one thanks Aaron. I have tried the auto trace and I was sure there was another way that would get me closer. One of the many tasks at my job is making banners for a certain soda company with their current prices and promotions. Sometimes the stores or sponsors want to include logos or artwork. A lot of the time however the image is very "bity", is there also a why to filter it to get the outlines a bit smooth (no pon intended.).
Thanks again!
Jeremy
