Hey Crimson, Alan, Morris, Richard and John
by Eric Miozzi on Feb 17, 2003 at 5:56:33 pm

Hey guys,

I did the heading for the post since you were the ones who responded to my last request and I don't want to restart the original question of system specs.

Ok, here's the thing, after playing with a few demo's, I think I may be changing my mind with the Storm2 card, and going with Vegas 4 instead. My question here is, should I rethink the configuration or is there a need to tweak it since I am going with a new software and changing some hardware (changing Storm2 to a regular firewire card).

Crimson recommended Soyo KT333 DRAGON PLUS with AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (2.13Ghz) 333FSB CPU & Fan: $380.00

Is there anything with AMD that matches the P4 3.1 that's out there? How much of a difference would I see between the two?

Sorry if these questions are mundane, but I really am trying to get the absolute most with the money I have since it may be a while before I can upgrade again.

Thanks,
Eric Miozzi

AMD is coming out with a 3000+, however the P4 3.06 does outperform it especially with HyperThreading enabled. Personally I would go for a Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra 2 motherboard and a P4 3.06.

Eric,

DSE had posted a render test for VV3 a couple of months back. Many folks responded and posted their render times using that test as a bench mark. Fastest render times with fastest first were:

Single Pentium IV with RDRAM
Single or Dual Athlons
Pentium IIIs

Since Vegas is not optimized for dual CPUs, the dual Athlons did not make much, if any, difference. If I were to build a system today, I would go with the fastest single hyper-threaded Intel Processor I could afford with RDRAM.

But there is always an exception to everything. I been noticing posts about the new Ulead Media Studio Pro 7 which is supposedly has been written for hyperthreaded CPUs and dual CPUs. It supposedly has REAL realtime output without rendering for much of what it does. Due out about March 5, 2003 or so. If I were to go with MSP7 then maybe dual CPUs might be a consideration. But seeing is believing.

PS: The amount of RAM over 512 MB did not make any difference in the render test. Also, slower PIV's with RDRAM beat faster Athlons with DDR ram.

One other thing is that my Tyan S2460 dual Athlon motherbd with 1 GB ram takes about 45 seconds just to start the power on or restart POST. Apparently it is doing a full RAM test on every boot which is very slow. I really don't like this about the S2460 motherbd at all. There is no way to defeat the RAM test that I have found to date.

Hope this helps,
Morris

Oh, and one more thing,

If you decide to have Earl build your system I think you will be happy with his post sales support. I bought a disk drive from him and when it failed, he immediately sent a new replacement. The replacement was bad and he sent another replacement without any hesitation. I recommend his company, pcnirvana.net.
