Ken PlotinHELP cpuinf.dll missing.
by on Dec 29, 2002 at 10:31:34 pm

Wow!This must be my week for system troubles.
I click on a previously good video file and get an MPL Loader window pop up saying "cpuinf.dll" missing, and then "MPLAPX.dll missing. I updated media player to 7.1 with no luck. These windows crash windows explorer.
What are these dll's and how can I recover them without reloading Windows 2000?
Only new program added recently is the Ulead DVD workshop demo.
Thanks for any help(again).
Ken

OK. The cpuinf.dll is a file within Ulead DVD Workshop. I copied it to my system folder and that warning no longer comes up.
HOWEVER: the MPLAPX.dll one does, and still crashes explorer.
Does anyone know what this file relates to?
I ran a search in every program that I have and can't find it.
Thanks for any help.

hello...

not sure on that specific dll, but have you tried re-installing explorer? it will preserve all your current settings, and it might replace that dll with a good version again...

and if you ever uninstall anything and it asks you if you want to keep any shared dll's, be sure to say yes...

Thanks Curtis,
I'm running W2k SP2. Is there an option to only install Windows explorer? When I boot it from the CD and choose repair, there are only two options: fast and console. I figured fast might fix it but no luck. The other option look more complicated...I'm afraid I'll really mess something up. Am I overlooking a simpler way to only replace explorer?
Thanks again for your help.

hello...

ahh - windows explorer, not ie explorer? sorry - my bad there...that's harder to re-install... :-/

i found this online for ya:

http://www.thegline.com/win2k/issues/2001/30.html#3

it might do the trick...sounds like your exact situation, ya?

this also confirms that it's an issue for others as well, so perhpas ulead has a solution. from the looks of things, it would appear that the ulead installer modified that dll w/o regard to other apps that might need it... :-(

hope that helps!

Thanks citroc,
I posed the question on Ulead's forum site.
Unfortunately that article doesn't specify how the author "tracked down" the reference to that file in the registry. I didn't want to delete the Ulead folder with regedit, as I had previously saved shared files when I uninstalled DVD workshop; again, I didn't want to mess up anything else.

Is it next to impossible to reinstall windows explorer?
If not, how would I go about it? (I know, I know: carefully!)
Thanks again
Ken

hello...

unfortunately, there's no real way to re-install just the explorer itself (windows, not ie)... :-(

did you try searching the registry for that dll name? you might find the key/value pair that way...

Hi Curtis,
How would I search the registry?
I opened regedit and found a Ulead folder under software.
I have deleted all Ulead programs. Is it safe to delete that registry key?
I ran a search in Windows NT folder for the mplapx.dll but found nothing.
Thanks for your conyinuing help.

hello...

i would be _very_ careful when deleteing stuff from the registry - it's the one place on a windows box in the os that you can do very serious, permanent damage... :-/

you can search for a key by using edit -> find in regedit...to be safe, you can also back up your registry - try searching google for articles on how to do that...

hope that helps!

Thanks Curtis,
Another forum member sent me the missing .dll and I placed it back into my sys32 folder. The problem clips now play properly in Media Player 7.1.
I backed up the registry before I deleted the Ulead stuff.

Fortunately, I also Ghosted the System drive before I messed with anything :)...4 CD's worth of aggravation insurance.
Thanks again.
