Hi
i posted earlier about putting nearly 4 hours of footage on a DVD and Noah, most kindly, gave me some great feedback.

http://www.creativecow.net/forum/view_thread.php?threadid=781505&forumid=55...

The next thing for me to consider is then, will it be better on a DVD 9, i assume so, but as i have never done one of these before ; what additional pitfals and problems can be avoided when preparing a project for this media ? Can it be done on DVDSP3 ?

It can be done fairly easily the main issue is having a dual layer burner. The Mac's built-in drive is for DVD-5s only.

once again thanks noah,
Yes i was aware that i would have to take the project to a third party to burn, which is a little scary if we cant make a test copy (or two) first. I suppose the another option would be two discs buy a dual layer burner or do the project as two discs. I know the client wont want to spend a great deal; any ideas of the best way to skin this particular cat ?

You can test it on hard drive and also create a version with greatly compressed video to test on a DVD-5. Once it's perfect, replace with the high quality assets and burn to DVD-9.

criis daw,

Testing it on the hard drive is about as close as you can get to finding out before burning. You can make a highly compressed version and put it on a single layer disc, but you don't have the issues with layer switch that will come into play with a DL. I personally build the project to hard drive and test with Apple's DVD player. I format to hard drive as a disc image (you will need to tell DVDSP that your project is a single sided, dual layer disc) and set the layer break (and use OTP). I use a third party burning app to burn the image to the disc. I currently do that on a PC with RecordNow, but I would assume you can do this with Toast with the same success (esp since Sonic owns Roxio/Toast now). The +DL discs are pre-formatted as OTP. For the discs to work the best, the third party buring app should ideally honor the layer break you set in the authoring app, reallocate sectors so that LB meets the dvd spec (if necessary), layer 0 should be larger than layer 1--but both layers need to be filled with padding data so they are of equal size. Also, the burner and third party app should set the bit setting for 'rom' to increase the compatibility of the + media. I know that RecordNow with the Pioneer AO8 and beyond do this, just can't tell you for sure how well Toast accomplishes these tasks.

Thanks for you input...
Cant help thinking it would be easier to just put it on two dvd5s (well at least its not uncharted territory)

It's not a completely uncharted territory. I have done several projects using +DL, and have been very pleased. I find myself not worrying as much about the bitrate in the sense I will use CBR with birates on par with what I used for my max VBR to do my projects. I can fit more high quality video per disc, and (knock on wood), they have performed better than I had expected based on early reports of poor disc compatibility. In fact, I they play on players that wouldn't take + media at all in the past, and only a few brands of - media.
