Hello all,

I have long visited the Cow, but recently joined and this is my first posting. I feel sorta tingly...

Anyways, I was wondering what the pay scale may be for a broadcast designer in a top 10 local news station.
And, how many designers does the avg. station have in their art dept?

Thanks for the input.

In news, the payscale for motion graphics varies.
The lowest I've heard of was actually at one network news station.
They paid AE artists the same union base as studio camera operators.
That's like paying an MD a waitress salary. You don't invest money
and years mastering a skill that only leads to a blue collar lifestyle.

Some local news stations understand the value of talent, and pay decently.
Even though the rates are less than what artists make in design shops
they are respectable - and the companies will make up for the lower
salary with amentities - like being flexible with hours when things
are slow.

Companies that resent artists making more than studio labor need to
be educated in the time and investment involved in becoming
proficient, not to mention the time and investment in keeping up
with the field.

No experienced after effects artist should be making less than $40 an
hour anywhere.

Thanks Jean,

Very helpful. Unfortunately I am at one of those local stations that does not value talent.

"Just get it on the air" seems to be the attitude.

I once worked at a station where they treated us like royalty.
But the two previous designers had to walk before management
got the message. We really owed those guys.

Ever notice how most 'management' has never even done what the people they manage do?
I have had very few bosses who could put up instead of shut up. They get my upmost respect and I need'nt a reason for doing what they say. The majority however... the pencil pushers who shmoozed their way into a comfy seat in what they think is show business not only lack an eye for design but they lack the ability to deal with artists the properly. It's tough to follow a creative director with no creativity or direction and it's a shame great talent has to split before the higher ups can see what the real problem is. Such is the case though... over and over again. This is why you often see the manager type go shortly after a handful of great artists split ironicly, making the place that made the artists leave now pretty cool.
I imagine our industry is no different than any other in this regard. I mean, the boss's son runs many a company world-wide. Works out well in the long run. Someone has to make stuff work ya know? May as well be us at proud rates.

I've always wondered what would happen if someone with
strong skills and a good visual sense got one of the big clout positions.

It seems the ones who can't design themselves out of a paper bag, make up for it, with enough 'tude to stop people in their tracks. My current supervisor uses that tactic to keep control. But given a project to finish by himself, it always ends up being finished by one of the other artists.... too funny. But frustrating to say the least. Most of the people I have run across that have talent, don't stay very long.

On the flip side, most talent cannot manage like the managers do. To each his own. Most designers would not be able to pull off the management stuff without years of training in the alternate environment, during which times the design part of their talents would go to pot and they would be years behind by the time they got their management skills up to par.

I do agree, however, that talent should be compensated. However, people are paid what the market will support. If they could find someone else that would be happy to work for the rate that you get, even if they weren't as talented and could still get the job done there is no reason to pay more (from a management point of view).
