I just wanted to take the opportunity to welcome John as our newest leader to the Broadcast Designer's forum.
John is a broadcast designer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA and his clients have included Miller Brewing, Harley-Davidson, the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Lockheed Martin among many others.
His enthusiasm upon finding this forum in which to share ideas has helped spark many of the discussions here. He definitely believes in Jean's "take something, leave something..."

Hi Jean,
Yup, cow country, cheeseheads, beer grilled brats, we've got it all. Everything you've heard about Wisconsin is true ;)
As for your other point .. it depends. At the one shop I do regular work .. we haven't been hit at all .. but it's a one-stop shopping kind of deal ... from pre-production, shooting, post .. the whole deal. Of course, that's the place that does more boring work.
As for the big post house in town .. it's only in the past month that things have been picking up again. I've been getting fairly regular work from them again (after 4-months of none) .. so, cross your fingers. It sounds like they should be busy till the end of th year. But the first half was brutal .. they laid off half their staff.
Luckily, I haven't had any problems getting people to respond to my reel (and give me work).. but then, I don't think there's a ton of AE specialists working in Milwaukee (not with Chicago so close).

John - It sounds similar to what's happening in LA. I think the staffers are being hit the worst. Small independent businesses seem to be doing pretty well and getting work that formerly went to the "high end" facilities. There seems to be a mad rush among the Quantel folk to learn After Effects. This is a healthy thing because some (but not all) of these artists are afraid of and resistant to AE, and I hope they will start seeing the benefit of having multiple systems in house.
