Nascar Promo animatic test

Just started working on my new tv promo reel and came up with this. Now the cars in the shot are simple because I wanted to see how it would look before I build more detailed cars. I basically rendered things out in two layers in Maya and then brought them in to AE. The flag was waved in AE and drop shadows were added to the cars. I am defently going to put more into the shot (a live action shot of nascars in the background or a themed color background?) and suggestions?

Please note, this is not the final product.

thanks

bryan

I think you need to be much closer to the cars. They need to be bigger. I always like close-up mixed with wide shot. Trying to generate a lot of visual tension and then resolve it in a medium shot is a very difficult design problem that I don't usually have the energy to tackle.

Just a thought...How about the video footage of nascars coming between the flag and the logo directly towards the viewers? or nascars bursting through the flag then logo. Great start! I really do need to learn AE, can't wait! Just a newbie here, but you all keep my creative incentive alive, Thanks!

Well, everybody said "do it your way" to me and I did. I never used logos that people knew about and that saved my a... when I looked for employment. They whant to see original stuff no mather how bad it is. If you saw the NBC logo for the first time today, what would your feelings be about it?! (Right, nothing! But hey, cool animation though!) Think about it!

I dig the flag and the logo but the cars are a bit primative. Kinda toy lookin'. You may be better off using real cars here. This'll keep you from having to model more detailed versions in Maya. It may be quicker to pick out your shot/shots first, then animate the flag to match.
enjoy

Speaking of toys, is it a decent idea to shoot some extreme close-ups of Hotwheels Nascar replica cars with chroma key? As far as the finish flag, I purchased a finish flag at the local swap meet and shot it myself for an off road race promo.

If it's set up and shot carefully, you should be fine. Make sure the green or blue background is far away from the subject and evenly lit. When shooting greenscreen, I always backlit the subject with a yellow light for extra contrast but the Ultimatte people say you shouldn't do this.

I want to be careful about using live action footage from the races because I don't want to hear from NASCAR's legal department about this. What I was trying to get the effect in that animatic was the cars driving down a checkered road that is waving like a flag (using AE built in waver). I think I should build the car in more detail (remember what you saw was an animatic car not the final product). I played around with the Delirum (Sp?) Camera shake and that was kinda funky to simuluate the distortion when the cars move past the camera at a high speed as if it were hand held.

What I was thinking and the end of that shot when the logo is revealed have a close up lower shot of one of the cars speed by (motion blured so I can get a way with stuff) followed some effects and use that as a transition effect to the next logo.
