FCP to Avid Film Composer
by Robert McDougall on Mar 11, 2005 at 12:01:18 am

I'm trying to send my projects from FCP to Avid. There's a few issues I'm having... Editing in FCP HD 4.5 NTSC DV, 24fps, Powerbook G4. Shots are animations with no timecode.

1) Is there a way to convert my quicktime sequences out of FCP or QT so they require less re-rendering when importing into the Avid? I've put the Avid Meridien compressed codec on my Mac OSX 10.3.8 but get an error any time I try exporting using this codec. Have tried QT, After FX & FCP. Put codecs in LibraryQuicktime.

2) Is the best way to get EDL's or projects etc to the Avid using something like Automatic duck?!? Or is is not worth it since there is no timecode to relink??

3) Editing will be done in 16:9 on the Avid. FCP QT's are 4:3. To match in FCP I'm needing to scale 26%. Quality loss isn't an issue at the moment... What settings should I export out of FCP to match the Avid? Likewise what setting should we use on the Avid to import?? I'm used to PAL so not as familiar with NTSC ratios... FCP obviosuly deals in pixels ie 720 x 480. What should this translate to for the Avid to play it correctly?

Thanks in advance for any help. Have also posted on FCP forum ...
