We just installed AfterEffects 5.0 on a new G4, but M100 is not on the same computer. We've always had the option to render our movies as a Media 100 clip that quickly imports into M100. What do I need to install and where on the new computer to have that option? I tried installing it into the extensions folder, but no luck. Is there a separate install program on our M100 Software disk?

Thanks,

Phil

To have the option of rendering to the Media 100 codec, all you need do is install a media 100 hardware card. There is no other way. Seriously. A software codec is one of the most requested additions to Media 100.

Two choices - render to Animation codec and import to media 100 (relatively slow) or render to MJPEG B and import (just slightly faster). MJPEG B file is smaller but carries no alpha channel. (If you want an alpha channel, use QT Player Pro to export to the media 100 codec on the target machine, import that file. If you go direct M100 wants to keep the Animation file around for the alpha.)

Phillip, on a different note. I've sent several emails asking about the M100 Companion upgrade. What gives? No upgrade yet, and no response on e-mail. Strange, considering you use my name on your web site as a satisfied client. Hmmmm.

Greg,

my bad. I just searched my email in box and there is indeed an unanswered email from you from a couple of weeks back. My apologies.

The update is coming. I know I've been saying that for a while but it is going to happen this month - because I can't take a vacation until it's done and I *need* a vacation really bad. by way of explanation, bordering on making excuses I guess, there has been a lot more work involved in getting our office and US operation happening. Here we are two people trying to do a whole lot more than we reasonably should.

We have delayed one additional week so we can incorporate the 7.5 changes but that will still put us within May.

Philip,

Maybe I misunderstood your post regarding the use of QT pro to speed up the importing of QT files into M100.

I have setup a second MAC to do some network rendering with AE. The speed I gained was lost however when M100 took 20 minutes to import(render) the :30 Animation file into my M100 bin. So after reading your post above, I picked up the Pro version of QT thinking that I could do a conversion of the Animation file into something the M100 would read faster.

Still ran into a long conversion however. Is it possible to speed up the importing process on the M100 machine?

Thanks for any suggestions using QT Pro.

Sorry to give that impression. Basically there's no way to speed up that import. If you do it direct to Media 100 it takes the time it takes, if you do it by using QT Player Pro to convert the Animation file to Media 100 codec, it takes roughly the same amount of time in QT Player Pro, but imports instantly into media 100.

The big difference occurs if you have an alpha channel file in the animation codec render. If you import direct to Media 100 you need to keep the Animation codec file around for Media 100 to access the alpha . If you first convert it in QT player pro the animation codec is copied into the Media 100 file and you can get rid of the Animation codec render.

If you don't have an alpha channel, there isn't an advantage one way or the other. The speed is largely taken in taking the animation codec movie, moving it to the vincent card, getting it compressed by the card, bringing the file back to media 100 and repeat. The same thing has to be done by the QT Player Pro. A software codec would be much faster but does not currenlty exist.

Thanks for clarifying. Too bad, I thought could cut some time out of it.

Should I be seeing M100 as an option in QTpro when exporting? Currently it isn't one of my options.

Does the QT conversion need to be on the machine with the M100 card or will the M100 codec on my second machine do the conversion too?

The Media 100 codec only exists on the hardware card so you won't see it on any system that does not have the card installed, but you should see it in the export codecs of QT Player Pro on the system with the Media 100 card and the Media 100 extensions active.

Do I need to place the M100 codec into the Quicktime folder as was done with AE? The movie to M100 option isn't currently one of my choices in the export window. Also should there be an mpeg2 option in there or only if DVDStudioPro is installed?

thanks,

I need to be able to use m100 compressed files on a mac without m100
and I cant find a codec to down load to save my life.

Should be in the extras folder in your Media 100 folder on your installed system. It's called the Trascoder. It will also be in your System>extensions folder.

If not, it's available at the Media 100 site (somewhere!) for both Mac and Windows.

But remember, it's a one way process - it reads Media 100 files, but will not write them.
