A thought to ponder...(part 3 of the "infinite number of monkeys" theory")

A typical digitized picture on your computer screen is 640 pixels long by 480 pixels wide, (we'll ignore D1 aspects for simplicity) for a total of 307,200 pixels. Using only 256 different colors, you can get decent resolution. Now if you take 256^307,200 (256 times itself 307,200 times) you get... well, a pretty big number, but a finite number nonetheless.

That's the number of different images you can have of that particular size. Any picture you would digitize or create with a computer at that size and resolution will necessarily be one of those images. Therefore, contained in those images are the images of the faces of every human being who ever lived along with the images of the faces of every person yet to be born, along with every other image that you could hope to create.

Chances are that whatever you create has either been done somewhere before, or will be done eventually. (Given an infinite amount of time. (Which I sometimes wish I had when trying to think of new ideas.) ;)

Of course, that's like saying that since there are only twelve notes in the western scale of music, you shouldn't worry about writing new songs. The point is that the creativity is not in the notes or the pixels, it's all in the order that you put them.

Does this make anybody appreciate the role of editors any more? Whether we are musicians, producers, graphic designers, or videographers, we are all editors in the grand sense of the word.

Sorry for waxing philosophical...it's been a long week, and I've been drinking coke and eating cocaine (actually, powdered sugar) donuts all night.

Really nice analogy there Tim, I really thing most people feel Editors have cut and dried button pushing jobs. But you'd never hear someone say that to a pianist or a painter. Thanks for sharing.

I once had the Videographer I worked with tell me, in a sharp toungue, that I was just a 'glorified button pusher'. To this day, I remember the look on his face when I asked if that made him a 'glorifed camera operator' Very satisfying!

Interesting thought about the faces of all the people on earth 640x480, thing.

Where do you get your coke(aine) anyway?

Note to self...never post when you are delusional from editing all night.

Reading this part of my post the next day makes me realize that it sounds like something you'd hear a drunk man shouting in your ear at the hotel bar.

Of course. Anything could happen given an infinite amount of time. (*Except maybe the client making a final decision on this project I'm working on.) (*said with a wink and a grin)

glad you cleared that up, Tim. I pictured you with a bottle of mad dog, hackin' on the keyboard, naked with a mooose hat on.

Creativity is infinate. From music to filter combos, rest assured your look isn't being nailed anywhere else.

Now go to bed!

"now, whats not wonderful about moose hats?"

...nothing.

As long as they're on a moose....who has clothes on.

:-)

...just couldn't resist continuing this frivolous thread...

(7 ft. Gumby...?)

dude, If I had a picture, I'd share. For some reason, my old 7ft gumby fell in the same catagory as the moosehat in my little mind.

I should set up a render and go home...
