Hi,
I'm still trying out the demo of Vegas (I have ordered it-
switching from Premiere 6.0) and I decided to play around with your idea-
It seems that putting the lens flare on a SEPERATE track above your diamond layer (set composite mode to ADD) and then manipulating keyframe settings with perspective and position, size, etc...on the effect layer gave a decent result.

Exactly. put the flare on a masked track, apply to the parented mask.
