Cinema 4D or Maya
by dave on Mar 18, 2005 at 2:15:35 am

Hi folks,
I am interested in learning a 3d program to add to my 2d compositing skills using AE 6.5.
I hear good things about both programs but since I don't have experience using 3d stuff
could anyone give an advice as to which would be best to work with AE?
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Dave,

Go for Cinema 4D.. It has the best integration with AE. You can import cameras, lights, render-pass layers into AE very easily. Also, it's the easiest 3D app to learn. However, if you want to do complex character animations, go for Maya, but it has a very steep learning curve.

Cheers,

Andy

Thanks for the quick reply Andy.
I am not looking to do much character animation so I will go with Cinema 4d.
Easier learning is also great thing because I don't want to spend too much
time learning 3d stuff as it will be a suppliment to my AE compositing for now.
I appreciate your advice.
Dave

Dave, I use Maya but my suggestion is to go with Cinema 4D as well. Cinema 4D should have everything you need for a very long time to come and the dollars you save on upgrades and support will be nothing less than huge over time. Maya also has very restrictive copy protection that doesn't even let you move it to your new Mac each year without paying them a transfer fee (unless you are paying their pricey tech-support/maintenance program). Maxon it one of the most helpful and supportive companies I've come across over the years, plus their support and upgrade policy are much better. Cinema 4D rocks and even though I like Maya as an application I would go with Cinema 4D XL if I had to do it again.

Just my $.02

Tony!

Thank you, Tony.
That helps me to make a better decision in addition to Andy's advice.
Best,
Dave

I am learning Maya as well, though I love it and think everyone should have as much fun as I am with Maya, based on your needs I'd agree with everyone else-Cinema 4D sounds better for you.

Heya,

How about MAX? - Certainly worth considering.

P.S. We just released a new plugin that lets you take helpers/cameras in MAX and import them in AE as well - so there is tighter integration.

Cheers,

Max? Never heard of it, does it run on the Mac?

[Tony!] "Max? Never heard of it, does it run on the Mac?"

Yeah, but you need more than one. That's why they call it ...

Heya,

When I say MAX, I mean 3D Studio MAX (or 3ds max) from Discreet (www.discreet.com). It is only on the Windows Platform - sorry.

P.S. Steve, sorry dude - your joke was lost on me.....

Cheers,

Two "Macs" makes a "Max". Sort of like "Miners, not Minors".

You can't import 3D objects into AE unless you do it through the Zaxwerks Invigorator plugin.

You can import rendered images, cameras and nulls into AE from some 3D apps. If you want to do that, there are some good tips in the Meyers' Creating Motion Graphics volume 2.

If that's not what you want to do, please write back.

Angie Taylor has a great free tutorial on how c4d and ae work together. You would have to run her name through A9 or google to find the link.

I just read your post and found it helpful. I use AE 5.5 heavily, and I am looking to do some 3D work (mostly logos but eventually more complex work) and was strongly considering Zaxwerks, what do you think of Cinema4D vs. Zaxwerks?

I work for an event/staging company and want to manipulate our custom stages into our edits. Our staging software produces .DWG files which I have heard can be converted to .DXF files. Any comments?
Thanks
