Hi fellows,
From my customer I often get video material on DVD: VOB files.
(I have to edit the video material in After effects.)
How can I get this stuff on my pc hard disk without losing quality?
There are DVD rippers but they are encoding the video again and the quality is decreasing.
And it takes a lot of time.
How do you handle copying dvd to pc?

Well, you could always copy the VOB to your PC and rename it from .VOB to .MPG and then bring it into After Effects. But I don't think you are going to be happy. I use ImToo DVD Ripper and it works fine converting to AVI for me to use in Premiere Pro ot After Effects. I don't see any compression problems to speak of.

Cooool! I love this method. Just rename the VOB file to mpg.
Why should I not be happy with this?
The only thing I´m missing is the sound.
How can I get the audio files?

maybe i'm not too computer literate but I thought that all you have to do to rename a file extension is right click and select rename and then simply rename the file extension. It changes nothing when I do that, so am I missing some software to do this or am I simply not doing it correctly? Any help is appreciated.

You might not be able to fool a Mac this way, but using Windows Explorer you should be able to copy a VOB from the DVD to the PC, and then change the extension to .MPG and then import it into After Effects. It works for me.
