Hello,

Maybe a very stupid question for the majority of you, but obviously not for me that I decided to put it on here. Ok, here we go. I am after an effect through AE which can be easily done by putting a filter on top of the camera lens. What it does is basically darkening the top portion of the frame. I am kind of new to the AE software though I have been using it for some time. I just can't play my head around this. Apologies in advance if this seems too basic to you. I hope soon enough it'll have the same effect on me.

I hope to hear from you soon. Best of everything,

Matteo Prezioso

No worries -- it's a technique, so the search terms might not be that obvious.

The lens filter is called a graduated filter, or "grad".
You want to make a gradient effect in AE, but that effect can be found under effect>render>ramp.

Make a new solid, any colour, placing it above your clip in the timeline.
Apply the ramp effect. The default settings might work for you.
Set the transfer mode (in the timeline) of the ramp solid to "multiply".
Adjust the effect point (the little crosshairs) of the black and the white parts of the ramp until it looks good. Also, consider changing the transfer mode if you want.

If you want a blue grad, change the black to blue. You get the idea.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thank you very much for your help. Guess what I am going to do right now, straight into the AE icon. Let's give it a try!

Thanks again,

Matteo Prezioso
