Fractal Noise
by Ben Brodbeck on Aug 26, 2004 at 2:46:42 pm

Hi,

I've seen alot of tutorials which utilize Fractal Noise. They say you need AE 5.5 for this effect...I have AE 5.5 std and I look under effect > render and I don't find it. Is this only in the pro version??? Is it a d'load? Anywhere I can get it?

Thanks,

BenyBoy

It's Pro version only. But there are workarounds to getting a sort of similar result: If you take two pictures of fractal clouds and overlay them while animating their positions you'll get something going...

In Photoshop (hoping you have it) create a document that's a multiple of 64x64 pixels. Probably best to make it larger than the final video you're working on, so 768x768 would be a good number. Make the background color black, and foreground color white. Now fill the image with the Cloud effect.

This effect uses a 64x64 tile so it's now seamlessly tileable. We need that for the next step.

Import this image into After Effects, and place it into a comp. Duplicate the layer, and apply the Offset filter to the top layer. Animate the Offset and play with transfer modes.

You could also try rotating the top or bottom layer, scaling etc. Maybe you need a bigger source picture if you want to rotate.

Play around with it, and you'll get some weird cloudy noise going.
