 | 2D vector look but using 3D space(AT&T Commercial example)
by walkinginspace on Feb 24, 2003 at 2:49:56 am |
I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on how a certain look is done and what software is being used. Some examples are some of the commercials that Psyop did for AT&T. Other examples are bumpers for USA Network, and Maury Povich intro/bumpers. It's basically making a 2D stroke/strokes travel and grow along a 3D space. They are flat colors with no shading at all. The look can be seen all over modern motion graphics during bumpers and promotional spots. If examples are needed you can see some of the commercials at http://www.psyop.tv under their AT&T portfolio section. Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Check the 3D stroke from Trapcode.
Sorry if it's not what you mean.
Salut

yeah, i have always wanted to know how to do that look ala "brand new school".. It is so great and effective. I hope somebody can shed some light on how to do this properly.

Hmmm...I would do it in a 3D app. Then import. Might bring in cam data too if needed.

Hey there,
Those cool 2D/3D spots were completely 3D rendered. I forgot what apps were used but prolly the usual 3D stuff. I read an article on these spots from http://www.designinmotion.com

Psyop uses SoftImage XSI. Brand New School probably uses Maya and Cinema 4D. I wouldn't be surprised if BNS uses Toon Boom Studio for some of their 2D stuff like Robot Jones.
The 'flat' look is kinda like 'reverse trompe l'oeil.' Just enought 3D to make you wonder if it IS 3D. This is achieved by using 'luminance' rather than 'color' values along with careful lighting.
Easy! Just take a year off to learn another world. cheers -govinda

ok, if you want to REALLY go into a creative seisure about this 2D / 3D line feel thing works, check out THIS piece from click 3x
it makes me drool, dream, cry and think with your standard emotional avalanche of Æ/3D envy :o)
the textures and reflections are SO subtle but unbelieveably believable. what a fabulous mesh of the organic and digital realms.
if anyone has any insites (other than what the article describes) as to how they pulled this off (the more detailed the better) or how this effect could possibly be done withOUT intense painting simulation/photography sessions, PLEASE don't hesitate to share.

Ahh, that stuff... Psyop made a lot of hay with that effect in their Lugz and Coflow spots (to better effect actually). It's not an easy effect in the software I use, but I don't think it's that hard...there's what my app calls a 'sweep nurbs,' and the paint texture, along with a duplicate of the paint texture in the alpha channel, flows along it, with a bump map applied with exemplary skill. The stencilled-out letters could be booleans. But then I'd sit down and try it and find I either couldn't do it or that the technique is something completely different.
But I think the question originally was more about things like the 'Peoplesoft' stuff that BNS did. More examples are all over the Troika and Eyeball reels. Psyop in fact uses more depth than most, including an exotic plug-in that gives depth-of-field to the reflections in the orange ball that stars in the Intel spot.
The 2D-ish 3D thing is exactly where I live. When it goes out of style, I might just have to have another idea.

I have succesfully done the look in AFX, using animated masks and the 3D camera. It looks just as good as the other examples. If anyone would like i can post the .aep file somewhere for you to download. Any more comments on how this look can be achieved are very welcome, as I'm sure there are many ways of achieving the look.

I just looked at your files. Wow! Thanks. I am a newbie and while I own Illustrator, I haven't used it yet. I guess I just found a reason. Thanks.
I have one request for the Mac users. Those of us stuck in the PC world understand that you don't need file endings, but if you could include a note to tell us which files were which?
Thanks,
Steven

Sorry about that. I will make sure to name them next time. I actually work on a PC at my home studio. At the TV station I work at they have Mac's(where i made that file). I actually prefer working on my PC(much faster, for less money), but I don't want to start a platform war. It's not the tools, it's the artist right!:) Hope the files helped.

Hi,
I have just opened the files on a P.C : After a bit of guessing, the extensions for those other PC users out there are :-
01.ai / 02.ai / 3D move stroke.aep / 3d move.mov / path try.ai
You'll need to relocate some of the files (use ctrl-H to replace). Nice technique. Another thought on how to animate the stroke. How about using the stroke plugin to stroke a rough path onto a solid and use the illustrator path as a track matte. Then drop this pre-comp into you 3D move comp. Just an idea. Seems easier (although you can't get that nice sharp edge. But you could animate an edge shape along the path also to fix this I guess.)
Cheers,
Andy
