Please don't shoot, I hate After Effects, will the Production Suite offer enough capability for an editor so that they would never have to buy After Effects? I have FCP HD, but have yet to purchase Motion or Shake.

Every one hates AE to start. But, to answer your question, you could get away with not using AE. If you need compositing, and can afford it, use Shake. But don't mistake Motion for a compositing program, it lacks many features found in dedicated compositing packages. I use AE every single day, not because I am in love with it, but it's just what I use, and every facility I seem to work at uses it. I am glad I know it, but I will hopefully be moving away from it soon.

Also depends on what you need it to do. Motion rocks at creating 2D animations, title design, particle FX and things of that nature. The only time I go running to AFX these days is when I need something 3D, motion tracking or some high end greenscreen compositing.

I agree with Noah. Motion does much if not most of why editors use AE (in a much friendlier manner I might add). Just not quite all of it.

Of course the other option is Combustion as AFX+. Sure, it has the interface to hate as well, but the $995 program can do things that AFX needs plugins for.

Combustion is a program that comes from a long line of Discreet UNIX based tools. Much like the Shake interface. Motion tracking, color correction, keying with the top keying plugins and much more, including 2.5D-Zplane with camera.

Just FYI

[Harry Frank] "Every one hates AE to start."

Every one hates AE? What an odd comment, Harry. I would say absurd, but I wouldn't want to sound aggressvie. Let's then just say that this remark doesn't get along very well with reality. You have every right to dislike it yourself, but it's a dominant (and quite loved) tool in its' field. What's the user base relationship between AE and Combustion? 70-30? 80-20? Something like that. It's hardly true that everyone hates it.

Some video editors hate AE (or whatever graphics/compositing application) because its' not their "natural environment" nor its' their true artistic field. They would prefer not having to leave their main application, the one they understand.
But, If you have a passion for design, graphics and compositing, it is unlikely that you will hate AE. Quite the opposite.
Motion is terrific and I use it daily. And it will get better and better. But I still have and will have a deep relationship with AE. If you vist the AE forum, it will be clear that an enormous amount of people feel the same way.
The things AE and Motion do, don't have to be your thing. But if they are, not using them both could be a short sight sin. This is not a sport where you have to pick a team and remain loyal. They both are a pleasure to learn and use. Nowadays you can get both AE and Motion for less than what AE used to cost a year ago.

I think you very much misunderstood me, Adolfo. I said "Everyone hates AE to START". The original post was a user that said.. and I quote "Please don't shoot, I hate After Effects".

I was simply stating that, as a general rule, when people sit down and use AE for the first time, they don't like the interface. I hated it, everyone I've ever met that uses it regularly hated it when they first started. It takes some time to get used to, and eventually, it becomes an extension of your creativity. If you are the exception to that rule, then I am happy for you.

But let me reiterate, I am an AE user. I use it every single day. I am the animation director for a post facility with 50 employees, and it is our primary compositing and motion graphics program.

I don't exactly know what is that you thought I said. My point was, as simply as I can state... if you don't like AE to start, give it some time.

Still friends?

Cheers mate.

Harry

Sorry, Harry.
I'm an idiot.
Sorry.
Sorry.
Sorry.

I always find it funny when someone rushes to reply making wrong assumptions.
It was my turn to be an idiot, as it frequently is :)

Of course still friends! Even if you had said what I thought you said but didn't!

I hated AE to start too.. I remember feeling smug about software in general, being able to use most without training or opening the tutorials, just by clicking around and figuring things out. With AE I was like 'what the f is this?' and it was fustrating until i did my first animated text with XFile-ish Light Blast that i was hooked and wanted to learn more.
