I finally got a finished project edited in HD and back to the camera. I got Cineforms HDLink last week and have been working the bugs out since them. Their tech support guy Thad did a great job of helping by the way. So there is a process that works to get real projects completely done. Maybe everyone here has already figured it out but until now I wasn't sure it would work. I also just heard about a DVD player from Vinc that supports playback of HD in the WM9 HighMat format which should be out in May or June. The player is supposed to retail for $350 and has a DVI output that allows it to output up to 1080i. Just thought I would share in case some people were still trying to use that horrible software that came bundled with the camera.

Yeah, there is talk about that over at the HDV area of dvinfo.net.

The cool thing about the HD-DVD players is the ability to playback the multiple formats. If you shoot HD with the JVC, edit it offline and you can render out the final HD file as WMV 9...you're all set.

2004 is the coolest year yet for video...HD for real cheap. I'm excited about the future too...2005, 2006...full high quality HD production for less than $10,000.

Y'know, you can buy a Bluefish444 HD card now for under $8000, and it wouldn't be hard to build a functioning editing computer for another $2K or so to get full quality HD today around $10K. Also, the Canopus HDW1000 will be out this year and will reportedly offer near-full quality HD editing for under $10K. And then there's the Cineform Aspect HD plugin for Adobe Premiere, which makes it possible to do semi-pro HD editing on a system which could be assembled for about $3000 for hardware and software. The era of affordable HD editing is already here; what we don't have yet is a decent low-cost HD (or HDV) camera.

Very nice. Anyone know if there's anything like this at a similar price for PCs?

They are preparing PC drivers for the BlackMagic Decklink HD.

Thanks Bret. Do you have any information you can share on what the recommended processor and hard drive requirements for the PC platform will be?

[kwshaw1] "Do you have any information you can share on what the recommended processor and hard drive requirements for the PC platform will be? "

Sorry, can't help you there. Why not post that question on the Blackmagic Design Decklink forum ??

Bart

P.S. Although I have a Windows NT/2000/XP background myself I've become a real fan of OS X. Have you looked at the G5's at all ??

Bret: I think the G5 Macs sound nice, but I'm more interested in laptops lately and am happy with the selection and pricing of hardware and software on the PC platform. Seems odd to me that Apple wants $3000 for a 1.33 GHz laptop when I can get a PC laptop at least twice as fast (in real terms) with most of the same features for about $1000 less. I also had a G3 Mac with Final Cut Pro for a while and couldn't find any compelling reason to use it when I was getting all my work done just fine on PCs. To each their own...

Bart HarrisonDecklink HD on what...
by on Feb 2, 2004 at 7:38:35 am

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of what you might plan to use with the Decklink HD card. A G5 with FCP is a working uncompressed HD solution available today. We run Linux, Win 2000, Win XP, & OS X on Intel, Motorola, IBM, & Mips. But we edit HD on the G5 !!

Bart

P.S. I admit my TiBook is a bit pricy, but I run OS X, Win 2000, & X11 (XWindows) simultaniously. It's really pretty cool.

Bart: it's intriguing that there's such an affordable full HD solution for the G5s today, but I can wait for the PC version and would be more likely to run Premiere Pro with Aspect HD on a PC laptop. Good news for both Mac and PC users lately...

Ben WaggonerPowerBook speeds
by on Feb 13, 2004 at 6:34:19 pm

Don't worry about clock speed when comparing editing workstations. GHz is kind of like RPM in an engine - it's related to speed, but different cars can provide very different performance at the same RPM.

AJA demonstrated uncompressed 10-bit SDI editing on a 17" PowerBook at MacWorld a few months ago (with external RAID 0 FireWire). A complete finishing enviornment in under 10 lbs.

There is equivalent stuff coming out in Windows laptops over the next few months, but nothing yet.

Thanks Ben, I'm familiar with issues of clock rate versus real-world performance. What's your opinion of the Avid Mojo and Adrenaline products, and can you speculate on whether these could be rigged to do uncompressed video on a PC laptop, as you say AJA has demonstrated for Mac laptops? Also, I don't see anything on the AJA web site about a shipping product capable of doing uncompressed video on a laptop, so what's the situation with that?
