So I've got a dual 2gig G5 with an AJA Io and I'm monitoring sound through a set of Roland MA-12 speakers. We use four channel sound, and the way I have the speakers hooked up is my left speaker gives me channel 1&3, and right speaker gives me 2&4. The only thing is, when I'm inside FCP, I must turn my speakers all the way down, in order to NOT blow out the speakers. The G5's mini-audio out is also connected to the speakers, and when they're turned down while I use FCP, I can't hear any of my system sounds. Is there a better way to set things up? Or did I just screw a connection somewhere along the lines?

Thanks for your help.

I am constantly criticized for making irate comments to users like you, who have simple innocent questions. The reason I do is that if I sense that someone has been in the business for a while, and does not know the most basic things, it disturbs me. If you are new to the busines, I apologize in advance.

I can only assume that you have chosen the Roland MA-12 speakers, because they were from an exsiting older AVID system. The Roland MA-12 speakers are inexpensive musical instrument speakers, that are not designed to take a +4dBu signal from the output of a professional device, like the AJA I/O. The are designed for a keyboard, or an electric guitar, or similar instrument. When AVID chose this speaker, it was one of the least expensive powered speakers on the market at the time. Over the years, the Roland MA-12 became a "standard", becuase there were so many AVID's out there. All AVID systems came with cabling, and AVID supplied a cable to feed the Roland MA-12 with a passive resistor pad in line with the connector (inside the XLR) to attenuate the level from the AVID Audio Interface (just like the AJA I/O), so it would not blow out the speakers (because the signal was also a +4dBu level). Every Roland MA-12, and every modern powered speaker is designed to accept a signal of around +4dBu, and so you must attenuate this level, to not blow your ears out. Everyone sticks a mixer in line with the AJA (or AVID, or CineWave, or anything else) before it goes to the powered speakers. This is common practice, and has been so, since the beginning of time.

I guess this was better than saying "stick a mixer in line with your speakers to drop the level you moron !".

Wow, that was pretty amazing restraint for you Bob. Very informative as always, but with a touch of compassion and understanding. I'm impressed ;-)

Tony!

P.S. Winston, Bob is of course correct - you need a good mixer. Try searching the posts for some recommendations. And don't worry about Bob, you can ask any level of question anytime.

Bob,

I am proud of you.

It was very informative of you to give us the background history.

Please keep it up.

Sincerely,

Tony Salgado

Thanks Bob. And although I've been in the business for some time, I've only recently become an editor. I started a grip, and more or less stayed one, until about a year ago.

Oh yeah, the system was put together before I got here, so I had no control over what speakers they got.
