RED 2 problems
When starting Premiere, I get a Dr Watson error when it is attempting to load "Boris RED 2". The error message reads:
An application error has occurred and as application error log is being generated.
Premiere.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005)
Address: 0x77f6ce0c
Also, I tried re-installing RED 1.54 and it works fine. Of course I had to uninstall RED 2 for RED 1.54 to work.
1. When I try to open the Boris Red Engine 2.0.exe I get an unhandled exception error message and then Dr Watson opens.
Unhandled exception: c0000005
At address: 77f6ce0c
2. During installation, when the progress bar reaches 100% the installation continues but it moves very slowly. Is this typical?
3. Do I need the HASP installed?
4. I was using RED 1.54 previously without any problems. I did uninstall RED 1.54 before installing RED 2.0. Should I have done this?

• | | | | | Pesky INI files.... by Kurt Raihn on May 18, 2001 at 3:12:19 pm |
After taking a breath and starting over I discovered some pesky INI files that were not removed during uninstall. I am now able to start premiere and use RED 2. However, I have encountered a problem with RED freezing up when using the Library Browser.
Anyone else having problems with the Library Browser?

Yep. I'm on a Mac, though.

Give RED a small break. It has got so many new features there are bound to be some small issues. I'm sure BorisFX will fix these and pretty soon RED will "Udderly Cool".
Moo.

I think Red is great. Had it from the first version, and Artel is good at taking care of things. But these issues need to be aired so they are aware, and perhaps folks can share workarounds.

Hi Kurt, nice to hear from you, sorry to hear about these issues.... I just reinstalled RED 2.0 into Prm 5.1c on my NT system, and my RAM is approx 163mb. I could not duplicate your error.... Can you uninstall Red 2.0 and reinstall? You should not have to reinstall the HASP if you have had it installed for RED 1.5.4. (do a find for 'haspvdd.dll ' to make sure) Although you should be prompted,( I was upon install of RED 2.0) that there may not be enough space to install, can you confirm that you have the drive space for the full install? You should have 3 files installed into the Premiere plugins folder: FL-RED2.prm, FX-RED2.prm and IMRED2.prm.. can you confirm that these files are installed? Also- in the C:Program Files/ BorisFX folder , you should have the RED engine, as well as the 'BorisRED2.dll' file. Can you confirm that these are in the correct location?
thanks, Susan

Hi Susan,
RED 2 seems to be working pretty well now. I do have a couple questions.
In the installation guide it mentions that the file IMRED2.prm is only for Premiere 6. Should I remove this file from the plugins folder since I am using Premiere 5.1c? I did remove it and noticed that the library borwser was no longer freezing on me while viewing different libraries.
In the style Palette for text, some of the items will not apply to my text. In particular, the natural materials. When I try to apply them and update the window, nothing has changed. When I exit out of the RED Engine and try to open it again it does not open. I have to delete the ini file for the engine to open again. The same goes for when I open RED in Premiere.
When I open the library browser and try to look at the 3D text settings for the EPS effect I get an error "bad or missing file".
Thanks for looking into these.

--HI Kurt, yes that IM file is only for Prem 6.--

-----Can you tell me the settings in particular that are causing this? I will try to duplicate it here....--

• | | | | | More details about my problem... by Kurt Raihn on May 22, 2001 at 4:07:45 am |
Susan,
Here is a more detailed description of the problems I am having with the Style Palette. I also have a question regarding exporting TGA files.
1. I Open up Boris Red Engine 2.0.exe 2. I select New Text Page. 3. I type in some text and highlight it. 4. I choose the Style Palette. 5. I select the TEXT tab or Gradient tab. Those styles can all be applied by either double clicking or choosing the Apply Style button. No problems here. 6a. I select the color tab. If I double-click or choose Apply Style nothing happens to the text. I even hit the update button and nothing happens. When I exit out of Boris Red Engine 2.0.exe and try to reopen it, it never opens. I have to end the process using the NT Task Manager then I have to delete the BorisRED2.ini file and then the RED engine will startup again. If I don't delete the BorisRED2.ini file I cannot open up the RED engine. 6b. The Extrusion, Natural and Material settings do not apply when double-clicked or when the Apply Style is clicked. However, after selecting these settings and closing the RED engine, I can then start the RED engine again without a problem.
Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't the Extrusion, Natural, Material and Color settings be able to be applied to the highlighted text when using the RED engine?
Exporting TGA files: When I export a TGA file it defaults to a resolution of 160x120 pixels. How do I change the export resolution? Under Preferences, my project options are set to 720x480 pixels.
HELP!

• | | | | | The plot thickens... by Kurt Raihn on May 22, 2001 at 5:17:11 am |
WHOA!
I think my problem may be that not all the directories are being loaded during install.
In the KeyFrame Library Directory the following directories are on the CD but not on my hard drive: Ensembles Eps Lights Pict Files Splines
In the RED 2.0 Style Palette Directory the following directories are on the CD but not on my hard drive: Color Styles Extrusion Styles Gradient Styles Material Styles Natural Styles
The Boris Plugins directory is empty after installation. Should it be?
Could I have a defective CD? I have 2 CDROM drives. I have tried loading the software from each drive and encountered the same problems each time. Could my drives have a problem reading the blue colored bottom of the CD during installation? I also mentioned before that during installation, the progress monitor reaches 100% but it continues to install for another 5 minutes but it installs very slowly. Could this be a symptom of a CD read problem? I have plenty of hard drive space.
Boy am I confused.

• | | | | | Talked to support, they helped me out. by Kurt Raihn on May 22, 2001 at 6:04:43 pm |
Susan,
I just got off the phone with Boris support. They were able to help me out.
1. There is a problem with the installer so some of my directories were not being loaded. They are working on a fix. Eps Lights Pict Files Splines
2. Some of the settings in the style palette I was trying to apply to text can only be applied to splie objects (that was my fault). Extrusion Styles Material Styles Natural Styles
3. Applying color in the style palette is a known bug and is being fixed.
Thanks,
Kurt
