RalphWill Encore work on a Sony Vaio laptop?
by on Sep 6, 2004 at 5:34:50 pm

Hi,

I want to buy the adobe video collection to use as my main core system. I have a P4 2,4Ghz and 1500mb memory with 2x 80Gb for video. But it doesn't have a DVD burner. So I thought instead of buying a burner for it, I would buy a laptop with a DVD burner. So I also have a mobile system. I just have to network my desktop station and the laptop when I need to burn DVDs. Does it make sense? I'm looking at the Sony Vaios PCG-K215m and K215s. How Encore work with the Vaios? I think they have a Matshita/mitsumi DVD burner. Does Encore work with them? I can also get an Acer Aspire of similar performance (and an extra 20Gb on the HD) for 200 bucks less. But the DVD burner in the Acer is a A-Opne, which I'm not sure is a trustable one. Never heard of it.
Any opinions on which laptop should I buy and if it make sense at all to buy one instead of a DVD burner only? I mean, I could spear the money to have one and get a extra system (and mobile one).
Thanks for the input

A bit slow around here. But I have some updates. I dropped the Vaio. Heard it was too buggy for NLE. I'm now looking at 2 different Acer Aspire. The 1711SMi(17" 4:3, 2.8Ghz P4, 512Mb, ATA100 80Gb 7200rpm), it looks really good from the specs and is the only one I could find with a 7200rpm HD. It also has a 1000mbps network card which will be useful when I'm burning DVDs in it which were edited on my desktop. It will go much faster, I would guess. The memory is alos standard desktop memmory(cheaper to upgrade).
The down side? It's huge (15"x 12.6") and weights a ton (15.6lbs)
The other option is the Acer 1662 WLM (15.4" 16:10, 3.0Ghz P4, 512Mb, UltraATA100 60Gb, not sure if 5400RPM or 7200RPM. Are all UltraATA100 7200RPM?) and it costs 300 bucks less, the battery last about 1/2 hour longer and weight half of the weight. The down side is smaller screen(althought since it's widescreen, it doesn't seem that much smaller), not sure if the HDD is 7200RPM, the network card is a 100mbps only. I'm really undecided between the two, but it most likely will be one of them. Also looked at a Toshiba Sattelite P10-824 and a HP pavillion ZD7167EA, but wasn't impressed. Any opinions? Thanks
