I've been working with high-end digital tools since the late 80's - Pixar's renderman, Maya, Shake, you name it.

Adobe interfaces have always driven me absolutely up the wall. Random, senseless, it seems as though not a penny is spent on human interface design.

Encore is supposed to work with Photoshop - i.e. build photoshop PSD with layers (specifically named) then import to Encore and assign timeline/chapters to buttons. For the life of me I can't get this to work.

I create an interface I like in Photoshop - text for buttons has rollover feature where when cursor or scroll hits it it'll change to (=2) image, but it just doesn't work in Encore.

Can someone please expelain in simple language how to create an interface PSD that will allow me to do a simple thing like have buttons change color when a cursor selects them when the menu is playing?

I don't know if I'm a comlete idiot - I can do an 800 node Shake composite for feature films, create realistic particle fx for major motion pictures but I can't read the Encure documentation and make any sense of how to create even the simplest of menus that work, and I've got some personal opinions about that, but I'll leave them in my head for now...

thanks,

john t.

Daniel Brown's Highlight Colors - The Lowdown on Subpictures video tutorial will probably make things much clearer.

Thanks for the link - even though I didn't end up doing the interface exactly like I had originally planned, I ended up with a nice alternative based on info from this tutorial.

I'd still like to know if there is a way to do the following:

when the button is active, a totally new 'button' image appears in its place. For the life of me I just can't figure out how to do this.

I'd really be grateful for a step-by-step explanation of how to accomplish this using Encore 1.5 and Photoshop 7

thanks,

jt

The DVD spec only offers subpicture highlighting to indicate the current selection on a menu. As a subpicture is only allowed to have 4 pure colors (one of which has to be used as transparent background) it is impossible to use it to display "normal" images.

To do what you want, you will need to use a workaround which involves a stack of similar looking menus and the "auto activation" feature. Please have a look at the Adove Encore forum FAQ: How do I create a button rollover effect?

Thanks - I'll give that one a try when I'm feeling a bit bolder & less frustrated.

I've always had trouble with the Adobe interface philosophy, I feel like their entire approach to workflow and interface leaves something to be desired, but their products work very well, and have incredible tools. Though admittedly this seems more like a DVD spec limitation - thanks for smart users out there who figure out workarounds, and great developers that create tools for us to implement them with.

Forums like this are so indispensible to Adobe-phobes like me!

cheers,

jt
