duffaffordable way to capture analogue - .avi

Hi -
I've been leaving many posts lately about capturing analogue video for burning to DVD. I'm thinking it may be best to capture the video as an uncompressed .avi and then let encore do the encoding. I believe this could be a better encode?

If this was the way, what would an affordable option be?

i wouldn't worry about uncompressed AVIs unless you are dealing with digibeta sources or something. if it's VHS or the like just get one of the various DV encoders, they're usually about $200- they have svhs/composite inputs and firewire outs. real easy, just captures everything as DV.
