I have a simply project, 3 animated menus, with transitions, 1 feature with stereo ac3 audio.
I've spent all afternoon fiddly with this stupid program, on my scene select page, the audio route button option is hilarious, so you want button one to link to its self do you, clever. How the helldo you change the button route? Help file is crap.
Designing subpicture's is a nightmare, who the hell wants to make a Photoshop file with this (+) ButtonSet 7 (=1) text highlight crap.
In Spruce Maestro I finished my project in 5 minutes, not including compile time. In Encore I have not got past setting the correct sub picture colours and highlights, utter rubbish.
The user interface is terrible, who thought that dragging a @line across the screen through crowded screens with loads of other menus and assets to make link was a good idea! Fire that person.

ADOBE go back to the drawing board!

Going to uninstall that demo ASAP.

Oh, the ac3 encoder is nice and fast, well done.

Must try harder.

A lot of people are having success with Encore. Perhaps it's not for you.

No, I also have Spruce experience. If it were not for Spruce going under I would stay with it. Encore is rubbish. I wish I would have spent my $500 on DVD SP. As much as I hate Macs I guess I am there.

Hope you guys know that Spruce was bought by Apple and is now DVD Studio Pro 2. And it too is buggy like hell...

(DVDSP 1 was based on Astarte DVDirector)

Are there any decent DVD auth apps?
I have Encore, I have used Reel DVD - didn't like it.
And lets not even talk about DVDit! I still use
Spruce Virtuoso. I know Apple bought Spruce.
Spruce still gives me the best results. Easy to use
with max flexibility. Encore with all of it's talk about being
integrated with Premiere Pro, Photoshop and AE is just
marketing hype. If have tried to use Premiere on & off over the years but could never really use it for professional results. I love PS & AE but the naming convention for PS menus used in Encore is very confusing and not user friendly at all.

This is all very subjective. The same program that you find easy might totally frustrate me. I like Encore more than Reel DVD, but there are those who swear by the latter. Once you get into the mind set, any good program is easy. As far as integration, Encore and Photoshop are tight! Have you tried Premiere Pro yet? Again, a different mind set than other versions of Premiere, but once you've "got it" you'll also get excellent results. I'm keeping an eye towards the future because Encore and Premiere Pro are 1.0 releases, and I know that many changes and additions (for the better) are ahead!

Good luck on whatever program you choose - Brian

I have been using Maestro for about 2 years. Got the new DVDSP and felt right at home. Its like the next upgrage we never got when Apple bought spruce. I have done 3 or 4 projects in the last 2 weeks and have been loving it. Fast and smooth. the scripting is almost identical, very nice. I just recreated a huge Maestro project from scratch in alittle over a day. Lots of tracks, lots of scripts for intellegent menus. Piece of cake.
Just all around a great authoring experience.

I'll drink to that!! Why did they ever leave the PC platform behind?
Maestro had such a huge user base, rival only to Scenarist, which I now use, and dont like as much as Maestro.
Apple should rethink and put out a PC version.

I see Apple putting out a PC version only when Steve Jobs has been laid to rest...
As for Encore, this is all good feedback... Actually, it's very confusing feedback.

Aside from a simply project, I'm with you so far...

Okay, right there... You lost me. There is no "Audio Route" button, nor is there an option for it. Are you talking about BUTTON routing? If so, it's on the bottom of the menu editing window. You'll need to turn off Automatic Button Routing in the inspector palette otherwise Encore will handle the routing for you. (Sometimes a good thing, sometimes not so good...)

> How the helldo you change the button route? Help file is crap.

Okay, even internally, we have our own opinions about the help system... I'll grant you it may need some work.

> Designing subpicture's is a nightmare, who the hell wants to make a Photoshop

I see criticism of the current workflow, but no offer of an alternative. I could see something like THUMBNAIL and HIGHLIGHT1, HIGHLIGHT2, etc. but even I have memorized:
(+)=button,
(%)=Thumnail, and
(=1,=2,=3)=Highlight colors.

Actually, that is among the most-loved features across three different groups. The GoLive team was, to the best of my knowledge, the first to implement this. Macromedia even liked it so much, they put it in Dreamweaver. After Effects added it in version 5.0 to define parenting. And - in short - I've demoed Encore in front of several THOUSAND people world-wide since it has become public information and it remains the second most crowd-wowing feature in the entire application. Photoshop Integration and Encore's support for motion menus tie for #1.

Now, with my product sufficiently defended, I'd love to hear your thoughts SPECIFICALLY on how to make Encore better. Don't just make this a place of complaint, make it a source for change. Since 99% of DVD designers in the known universe use Photoshop to create menus, how would you approach the process of moving files from Photoshop to Encore and still allow them to be NATIVELY edited?

Likewise for highlight color building. Would you suggest an extra channel defined for each layer? (they wouldn't synchronize but I'd be open for suggestions). Should each button be its own Photoshop file (as other applications do?)

As for the help system... Well, I'm kinda with ya on that one. With companies slimming down left and right, it's tough to keep all that information in there.

You DID read the manual and go through the tutorials didn't you?
