Okay, so I finally bit the bullet and started using InDesign instead of Pagemaker.
I was happy that for the most part, InDesign just sucked in my Pagemaker file.
But there are a couple things in particular that annoy me as I work.

1. When I first open the file, everything is outlined in red and I have to go to View-->Overprint View to get rid of the red outlines. Is there some preference that I can set to not have the Overprint View come up by default?

2. Also, I'll get my text tool and go to select some text, but it won't select. I'll have to go and get my arrow tool and select the text with it before I can select it again with my text tool. What's going on here? This happens mostly when the text lies within a box.

Other than those 2 things, I'm pretty pleased with InDesign overall. Glad I don't have to fight with OS 9 and printers anymore.

1) The red you see is most likely teh warning for substituted fonts. By changing into overprint view mode you found another way to get rid of it, while in overprint view whic is used by seperators. You shoudl go to edit >> preferences >> composition >> uncheck substituted fonts. Save your docuemnt and next time it opens you will not get the pinkish color warning you that you do nto have a font loaded. With no document open, not show warnings for substituted fonts.

Look into buying a program like extensis suitcase, which has an auto font activation plug in for indesign. You will not only get rid of the ugly font warning, but your type will load so you are seeing onscreen what your document should look like.

2)Not sure what is going on here, but you can email me a page and make the text red that is hard to select. To help troubleshoot this, I would do a view >> show frame edges, to see if there are invisible text boxes on teh page which are obstructing your text tool from selecting the text.

Glad to hear your printer is taking InDesign files. OSX and Quark 6 or 6.1 just do not get along.

Mike... since I am a true "non-expert," I watch this forum (along with another newsgroup) to get educated on InDesign.

I was interested in your reply regarding the original post about "everything" being outlined in red" when a document is opened.

Since, like me, the poster is a former PM user and may be opening PM documents, I thought your answer would be about layers. When I open a PM document objects are "outlined in red" instead the normal blue one gets when starting with a new document.

For some reason, when ID converts a single layer PM document, it puts the PM objects on a second layer (called "Default") which uses the color of red for object outlines. The layer below(called "Master Default") uses light blue for outlines.

Actually, to keep me from getting confused, I delete the empty lower layer and change the color of the remaining layer to Light Blue under "Layer Options" in the Layers palette flyout menu.

It's also possible that the original poster is not concerned about the color of the outlines, but that there are outlines at all since PM doesn't normally show outlines on unselected items.

FWIW

Thanks Richard, my answer to #1 was incorrect (but good information regarding font warnings). I misread the post and now see what is going on.

Your solution is the perfect thing to do, or you could alternatively:
1)select all
2)drag the red square in the layers pallete down to the blue layer.
3)delete the red layer

Sounds like you both agree the color red is annoying in comparison to blue for the frame edges. You can try hiding frame edges using Ctrl H, and then you will not see any color for the frame edges.

Great to see PM users using InDesign, and getting all the extra features. Let me know if there are any questions, and keep posting as the COW would like to get more users on this forum. They might actually combine is into an Acrobat/InDesign forum to get more posts. What do you guys think?

[Mike Gondek] "They might actually combine is into an Acrobat/InDesign forum to get more posts. What do you guys think? "

ID/Acrobat might be better. Actually COW is so motion oriented, it's not likely DTP types know of it. (I got here because I follow Adobe Premiere Pro posts.) I find online forums, newsgroups, and mailing lists, a great way to educate myself. I particularly like the COW format/layout. I also like the idea that there are identified "experts" participating which is not the case with other sources. Not to happy about the slight delay (even on wideband) for pages to load, but hey...

Of course Acrobat can be a very mysterious/frustrating application... kind of hard to understand exactly how it "thinks"... inscrutable error messages, etc.

I would love to see COW's DTP presence grow, but not sure how to make that happen.
