HDCAM tape has 4 channels of audio. Like you've stated, 2 channels stereo and 2 channels of 5.1

The 5.1 is encoded using 'Dolby E' which is created via an external box. I dont believe these are too pricy (sub 5k).

I just finished a HD show for PBS. All the audio was rerecorded and mixed in Logic. The Final Cut Pro sequence had color bars, slate and countdown with a "2 Pop" at the head and a ""Pop" at the tail to maintain sync during the edit process. (900 edits). When the cut was locked an OMF file was created of the Logic surround mix and sent with the D5 Master to a Pro Tools post house. The tracks were locked in sync with the D5 at the 2 Pop, encoded and recorded to the D5. (This could have been done in Logic but the audio was mixed in Branson Mo and getting a D5 there was out of the question.)

I've done other shows for DVD release with surround. Surround tracks were synced up in the FCP sequence, exports as new AIFF files and encoded using A.PACK.

Have your audio post house give you an AIFF 2 track stereo mix, and a 5.1 mix encoded in Dolby-E. The Dolby-E file will be 2 tracks on HDCAM tape, but when played back will be 5.1 surround.

Stereo on 1&2
Dolby-E on 3&4
