I need to buy a second camera, working on an indie film financed by someone else, but I am also working on a few of my own. When time comes to shoot I want to shoot in native 16:9 rather than massing around with lens converters.

Want to avoid Sony because I am so happy with my DVX100.

Any word?

S.

Peek into the DVX100 forum as well as on the HDV forum here and on 2-pop.

HI,

First it is not HDV, it is DVCPROHD. It will do 24P, DVCPRO25/50/HD on P2 for under $10,000. More later when the lock down order has been released. But my gut level is this is going to be a great camera.

Best,

Jan

[Jan Crittenden] "First it is not HDV, it is DVCPROHD."

I'm glad to hear that confirmed because I've been very UNimpressed by HDV so far. Plus we have so much DVCPro HD production going on right now, it's nice to know this camera will play nice with its cousins.

Of course, my big question is will there be a new P2 drive unveiled for use with Final Cut Pro or will we be forced to purchase a P2 "deck" to work with FCP. I'd love to see either an external Firewire P2 drive or an internal drive for the Mac's.

forgive my acronym ignorance, but what is P2? Will this format play on the DVCPRO HD tape decks like the aj-hd 1200?

It's a harddrive that records media right on the camera. Click on any Panasonic link and you can read up on them. There are readers that allow transfers to Mac, but they are hard to find, hopefully April will bring some more readers.

P2 is not harddisk based. It's solid state, meaning there are no moving parts. There's a lot of very good technical information about what to expect from P2 on the Panasonic website at the following linkL https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/p2/index.html

My dealer told me the P2's are running about $500/each. You save off your media to whatever format you shot on. i.e., if you shoot DVCPro HD, then lay back to a DVCPro HD tape. There's a ton of information at the Panasonic Website.

Sadly,

This camera will price me and probably most other "Pro-Sumers" out of the Panny market.

I vastly prefer my DVX-100 to the PD-150, but when I can get HDV from sony @ 24p (I think now) for $5k and still use mini DV....

I'm a small business, this camera leaves me behind unfortunately. An associate of mine was telling me about this new Panny format that would bring me back to Sony (I brag about the Panny), I guess this is what he was talking about.

Looks like a sweet camera for New gatherers and folks with bigger budgets though!

What you do is you have a P2 card reader that dumps the card's contents to a connected hard drive. So no more capturing footage, now you just copy it. Not really a deck, per say, and ,as I understand it, not even close to a deck's price. Or you could jsut uise the camera to connect to a drive and dump your footage that way. Since there's no moving parts and you're just copying files, using this camera as a deck doesn't hurt it at all.

But Superfly is right. This is not for people who were looking to spend another $4000 for another DVX. This is the next step up.
