I have 17 tapes of mixed frame rate footage shot on a Varicam and I need to start importing it into my edit system. I'm going to make different bins for each frame rate, run footage through the FRC and edit everything at 24p. Sound good? Any other suggestions? What happens to the audio on say a 30fps clip when it's converted to 24fps?

If you've read my posts below you'll know I've just been going through the same thing with a whole lot of footage, and having a very tough time of it. I'd be very interested to know if you encounter the same problems I have had with the FRC and general capture via firewire/1200a, or if you find any solutions. I hope you have an easy time of it.
The one thing I'm glad I did was keep variable frame rate footage and 24p footage strictly on separate tapes and not mix them, that seems to have helped me somewhat. I think you will have problems if you mix them on the same tape.

All the best,

Paul

Rob, on your audio question. When FRC converts a 60p clip to whatever frame rate you filmed at, the newly created clip does not contain audio at all, you have to get the audio from your original 60p clip. (This is assuming you're able to get it to work at all, your mileage may vary.)

Cheers,

Paul

just an addition....

FYI, if you shoot at 24fps and capture those clips using the 720/24p capture preset, your clips will retain syncronious audio. Only frame rate converted clips lose their audio. Incidently, make sure that clips that are slated for frame conversion are captured using the 720/60p preset, THEN highlight the clip in the browser and apply the plugin from the drop down tools menu (be sure you are running FCP4.5 and have installed both the plug in and HD components from the Panasonic 1200A website).

good luck,

Rob

[robert] "good luck, "

Thanks! It's not as easy as I thought but it's not that hard either. I have the HD Components 1.1 installed along with the FRC plugin and I haven't seen any major problems with the system. Well a rented 1200a did eat one of our camera masters so that kinda sucked. I have noticed that a/v sync on the computer monitor goes crazy when I monitor through Firewire and it's fine if I turn it off. The "1200a blink" is very annoying. I'm doing rough cuts now so just using the computer monitors is fine. I'm awaiting a Kona2 that should be here in a couple days so that'll take care of the monitor problems.
All and all it's a good system. The images the Varicam produces are stunning and the ease (with some exceptions) of use is great.
That being said I haven't tried to record anything to tape. Ahh to be an early adopter..... =)
