FCPHD and DVCPROHD details
by michael brennan on Apr 24, 2004 at 6:31:11 pm

Some interesting details that took many hours to elicite from Apple about how FCPHD handles DVCPROHD codec.

The firewire output is native DVCPROHD codec that is stored as such on the mac hard drive.
The firewire output can be the Varicam or any of the other DVCPROHD codecs. (hope this is true Apple!)
There is no loss between firewire output and what is recorded in the Mac.
There is no loss when a cuts only edit is performed. So it is possible to do a cuts only edit and firewire out a camera original quality master. (like how Sony xpri handles HDCAM via sdti)
When effects or mixes are perfomed the recording has to be uncompressed. (like Sony xpri)
Instead of uncompressing to 1280 x720 it uncompresses to the native DVCPROHD standard. In the case of Varicam it is 960 x 720. This saves storage space, reduces artifacts.
The Mac Motion software requires significant RAM to work.
The 1200 deck has options so check the price.

*Note that Avid also announced firewire connectivity to DVCPROHD at NAB.
*When asked about firewire connectivity to the iQ, Quantel stated that they didn't have it at the moment but said that if Avid can do it so could they.

There are two options on the HD1200A. One is the Firewire I/O, the other is the HD-SDI I/O and SD/SDI output board. With both of them the list is 31K, 25K for Firewire only and 21K with neither.

One is

hi what is exactly recorded on the tape of the HD 1200 A
in 1080i50 in 720p24 or 25
how is the upres from varicam source (960X720 for y and 480X720 for cr and cb) to 1280X720 for y (i suppose) and 640X720 for cr cb (i suppose also?)
and to 1080i50 and 1080i60 i think is different
what format apple fcp hd handle and how?
i mean what is the up res that apple do for monitoring and for out put (i think it will have to do with the card kona or bmd or other)

thanks a lot even if it is a lot of question but i think we need a memo for all the resolution and some serious test too
what is better fw to up res in 1200a deck
or uncompressed?

Not really sure on the PAL details as I only had a chance to see an NTSC 1200A.
