As I briefly mentioned in one of my last posts somewhere, Vangelis has always been one of my favorites and inspirations (this also includes his music that wasn't written for film). I think he creates a true mood and emotion in his work.

Bob, Have you checked this? Jeff Rona writes an article called "reelworld" for Keyboard magazine. There's a ton of stuff he get's into. And of course, I second Mark Isham as a suggestion. (see the other post for a link)

I agree with eda -- Bernstein was a huge influence, not only in film music, but American music in general. He once said something to the effect that he felt all his music was theater music in some way.
In that respect, I think there are many "classical" composers that you can hear through modern film composers. In addition to Bernstein, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and Holst seem to creep into many film composers' styles.

My favorites are, in no particular order:
Mark Isham
Danny Elfman
James Newton-Howard
Hans Zimmer
Dominic Frontiere
Maurice Jarre
Michael Nyman
Michael Kamen (ex-New York Rock and Roll Ensemble) ;)
James Horner
Leonard Bernstein
Randy Edelman
Why do Spielbreg, Lucas and many others use him? Because what he does works for the masses. It isn't trendy to like him but ahh, what the hell -- if I had a few million to throw at a movie and I could afford him or any of the others in this list, I'd use him.
