Actually we have tried every kind of export. We usually use Automatic Duck so that the source media actually shows up in AE. This is good for when you collect the project after for archival purposes, as AE actually collects all the media files, where as exports by reference out of Final Cut will not be collected, only the reference.

We did try self contained exports, reference and Automatic Duck. In fact, if nothing was changed in AE and reimported to FCP, the image was the same, which is a good thing. The problem is with accurate display in AE. With gamma sitting low, you want to adjust it up all the time.
