I don't understand how a newer deck (J30 vs. J-3) cannot have embedded audio. I just captured via SDI to FCP and the audio is coming through fine from a J-3 deck. You need to check your settings again.

BTW, you will not see audio on capture on the FCP meters, but it will be there on the timeline.
