[ Francois Stark ] Only problem with the Medea RT: when one drive really dies, there is no option of getting the data back. Sorry. Redigitise. bye bye data. That's one of the reasons I'm getting so excited about Xserve RAID. Proper PSU and drive redundancy, with a hot spare: when one drive dies, the hot spare immediately takes it's place and rebuilding of data starts automatically.

I wouldn't bother with a hot spare, really. When a drive fails, you just swap it out with a cold spare (that you have sitting in a drawer somewhere) and rebuilding starts automatically. When a drive has failed you only lose redundancy, not operability. Having a hot-swap disk in a 14 disk XServe RAID would mean losing 2x180 GB of storage "just in case" because you would need a hot swap on each channel.

Also, the Medea RTS/RTR/RTRX all have RAID-3 which offers similar data redundancy, but the XServe RAID is a truly incredibly box at an insane price...
